NBD: Fender Dee Dee Ramone Precision (pic heavy)

Are the differences between this and a standard P purely aesthetic? NOT A DICK QUESTION. Genuinely curious. In any case, great deal, great bass, and great NBD!!!
I was literally *at a show* (Steven Wilson, formerly of "Porcupine Tree" in Chicago with Nick Beggs killing it on Chapman Stick, Spector USA Series Coda 5 5-String with Aguilar humcanceling pickups & USA NS-5H2-FM Bolt-On Fretless Bass). I found out about this SDOTD while checking my email show during the set break, and by the time the show ended and we returned to our hotel room, it was Sold Out.

My Better-Half is getting me a Bass off my "Dream Basses" List for my 40rh Birthday back in January: I have a Mike Lull PJ5-24 arriving at the end of the month / beginning of April (actually a PJ/JJ5-24, as the Neck Pickup is being routed for both a Precision 5 and a Jazz 5) and dual Pickguards for both the P5 & J5 with EMG's "Quik Connect" wiring so that it can be either a PJ5 or a JJ5 as quickly as I can swap out the Pickguards.
...but still, I realize the above is not a "trOO Precision Bass", while the DDR fits my liking for Alder and Maple Fretboards, and hopefully if someone here doesn't "take" to the Dee Dee Ramone, they'll give me the chance to take it off their hands before returning it to MF.com... I'll pay the cost of the SDOTD + Shipping + Tax if Musician's Friend charges you that horrid thing like they do in my State. Pretty please with a Hey! Ho! on top?

IF you want to; with any new bass I buy, I take all the tags, receipts & material related to that instrument and store it in an oversized freezer bag. That way, if you ever decide to sell it, you have all the goods that came with it. It's worth the little effort & helps retain overall value. Even if you've played the heck out of it.

Gorgeous-- that right there is what I was raised to think a P Bass should look like. Only change I would make (purely personal matter of taste) would be to drill it for ashtrays-- but never install ashtrays.
This model immediately caught my eye when it first came out. $400.00 off, you done good. I would have sprung for it but had already configured one very similar for myself, the quintessential utilitary Precision.
I know Fender will never put an MIM in a hardshell, but this one certainly deserves it.

Nice instrument. Cool case candy. I wonder why the Adam Clayton signature Jazz came with nothing other than the basics? The instrument itself is amazing, but nothing in the case candy. Would have been nice if they had done a neck plate similar to this one.

The 70's logo on the headstock is a super big plus over the American Standard Precision. I don't like plain white as a bass color. GAS attack averted.

Not purely aesthetic. Has vintage (smaller) frets than the medium jumbos on the MIM and American Standards and has a heel truss rod access, which I suppose can be considered aesthetically different, but mechanically the same. There aren't many other current Fender P's with a 9.5 radius and vintage size frets. Maybe not a big deal to some, but definitely a feature that I would take into consideration and I think sets it apart considerably, IMO.

I got a japanese PB70-US (rosewood fretboard) instead of this one 'cos I think the DDR is a lot expensive for what it is, but with that discount I'm sure I'd buy it for sure!

- Never met Dee Dee but I did meet Joey Ramone. nyc nightclub 1989 and we were both extremely drunk. He was as nice - and as tall - as everybody says. He was slurring and sounded like Daffy Duck. Funny thing is, I was not so much a Ramones fan as I was a Morton Downey Jr. fan, and as Joey had recently been a guest on that tv show, I stopped Joey not to shake his hand but rather to get the skinny on Morton, an irony that both amused and disarmed Ramone.
Nice! I'd love to get that bass myself, but a) I'd feel compelled to call out the intro and b) I am now two months and 12 days into the Joe Nerve pledge of "not 1 cent" on a new bass this year. I'm hurtin' so bad...
GREAT observation! And you're the first to make it.! I, too noticed that all of Dee Dee's white P's had the holes for the ashtrays. According to the "Ramone's Instrument's" website, he used to buy these basses sometimes three at a time right off a showroom floor. So they were stone stock, and came with the holes pre-drilled for the ashtrays (which he never used). I'm kind of surprised that Fender missed that detail on this Signature bass.

I've got JUST the thing. I once bought what I can only describe as a "Relic'd" Fender Tweed Case. The outside suffered from being left in a humid garage too long. The inside was very musty, but I was able to kill that with Febreze and lots of time. It looks very roadworn, but is perfectly fine for storing such a bass as this. Imagine opening this poor case, and seeing a brandy-new white P!
As for the white color, I have to admit....I didn't like white either. I don't own another white bass. After having this one for a couple of days, Maple 'n' White is starting to grow on me!

Agreed... The "Blow Out Sale!!!" at L&M last month was incredibly disappointing.
