NBD: Fender Modern Player Satin Jazz

I ordered one last week...have never ordered a new bass without trying it before...nervous excitement... This bass intrigues me..I really hope it is as versatile as it's made out to be
They're steel rounds like pro steels, but apparently more flexible somehow. I think they're still hex core but with a thinner core wire. They're awesome.
Made in China. The hardware is rock solid and the electronics are flawless.
It really is that versatile. Position 4 gives you a standard jazz bass that sounds just like a good jazz bass should. The other 3 positions give you 2 barking humbuckers, a pj or a jp. And the solo'd middle humbucker essentially sounds like a pbass. Maybe I'll try recording samples through GarageBand. It's a rainy day and I'm bored. It's definitely one of the most versatile passive basses out there.
I had one, and still would if it was about 1lb lighter. Probably would have sanded the neck off eventually, but I didn't find it sticky at all. It was a lot of bass for the money - I got it when the satin models first hit the stores, for £364 - it then went to £401, and now £419, and I wouldn't be shocked if it hit £450.
The guy I traded it with has since flipped the pups or changed the wiring, so the single coil settings were the inner coil, which apparently sounds more 'traditional' Jazz. I'd like to hear that, but the outer coils were fine for me.
If I could find one at 9lbs or less, I'd snap it up. Maybe even 9.5lbs with ultralites & a lighter bridge would be enough. Mine was built like a tank.

Yah. Mine's gotta be at least 10 pounds. That and the super glossy neck are the only negatives about this bass for me. I've always hated thick straps but I'll need a good 3 incher for this one.
A thick strap helped a lot for me. It also helped that it balanced perfectly; that headstock would not even dip slightly. For any practice less than an hour long, it was a joy to play.
I'll be rocking mine once again tonight here in a few short hours. I usually find myself running the bridge p/u as a humbucker and the neck p/u in sc mode, mixing that with running the neck p/u between 80 and 100%. For a couple of our harder hitting songs I'll go dual hb. Really is a great bass.

After looking at the OP's pics on my computer it also looks to me like the PG film is still on there. If it weren't for a couple of extremely small bubbles at one of the edges of the PG (barely noticeable) I would have never taken a second look. I cautiously used a razor blade to pull it up and at first I wasn't sure if I was just digging into the PG until the film started lifting.

Awesome! My pg on mine got scratched pretty easily. If there was one real flaw, its that. That gloss goes away awfully quickly with use. How do you like the tuners? I got mine (the fiver) last august and i will say those seem to be the only weak hardware link. There seems to be a lot of "play" before the tuner actually starts doing its job.
The tonal variations just kill IMO!
My tuners are tip top. Very precise. Superior to any MIM I've had. I can't put this thing down. I keep discovering my new favorite tone. Today, I'm digging the solo'd brisge humbucker. It barks.
Nice! I typically run both 'buckers on full with the tone knob at about 3/4 way up.
That is weird cuz the regular non-satin modern player and the blacktop precision which all essentially have the same pickup configuration all have 8 pole pieces on each pickup and this one has 4.
The 5 poles like that is a strange layout, but it definitely didn't impact the output or string to string balance. Seemed to work okay.

It's like why they did it to the Roscoe Beck p-ups. Putting the poles further away tends to reduce the punch on attack. It's part of why Leo switched from poles under to poles on either side back when he changed the P to a split.
