Well apparently G&L will still make an SB-1 even though it's discontinued, you just have to order it directly. I don't know if they do this for all individually ordered basses, but it has a really nice figured maple 'board and one of the nicest nitro finishes I've ever seen. Makes my American P look and feel cheap in comparison.
I love my fender P but it just didn't have enough punch, especially in the higher register for me. This does and then some. I actually have to plug it in the active input on my amp. It also has a series/parallel switch when switched on dials the pickups down quite a bit for a thinner more vintage sound or a midrange only punk rock tone if you add some distortion (think The Strokes). This has a jazz neck with 7.5" radius.
Overall I am super pleased.
