NBD - Ibanez Talman TMB100 - honest, impartial first impressions :)

So, I just gave it a full setup. Curiosity got the better of me. I think you may be right, Maxdusty. I may have just got some junk in the open gear while I was filing the nut, or something. It seems to have smoothed back out. AND.... the Tapewounds are NOT causing grounding hum. YAY. :bassist: It set up Very nicely and we will see if the Truss Rod adjustment holds. They had the Truss Rod BOTTOMED on back bow from the factory. But, it set up just how I like it, so we will see in a day, or two! :smug:

I wasn't going to change the strings, BUT, Rounds are just To Bright for me AND I am a wooos. I Love the feel of Tapes and Flats.

Good to hear! I had to tweak my truss rod when I got my bass, the string height was also set so high. I wondered why the factory sent it out like that, perhaps no time to do it? At least the fret ends were smooth. The truss rod took to the adjustment pretty well. I didn't have to tweak it any further.

I asked my guitar tech why so many new instruments need to be tweaked. He said that if they're coming out of a factory in Asia, the factory worker isn't going to know how to do a proper set-up, and to keep prices down they aren't really done. When you include the factory setting (how are the instruments taken care of throughout the process), travel (bumps and rattles), different humidity from starting point to destination, and the relatively inexpensive price point, then it's unreasonable to expect any instrument to be set-up and ready to play straight out of the box. If you want that kind of service, then you need to get a higher end instrument. Maybe he was just sales-pitching, but it made sense to me.

Thank you. That does make sense. The truss rod adjustment was no biggie for me also- no truss rod cover so it didn't require much work, I was however puzzled by the saddles being on max though (wonder how they were able to test the playability with it like this, oh well) but as you mentioned, I guess that's to be expected for a bass this inexpensive.

I want to replace the original TMB-100 pickguard with a gloss black one to match the headstock so I contacted Tony at Pickguardian. I'll send my original to him and he's going to make one for me for $47.50 shipped. DEAL!!!!

I'll remind him that he should just go ahead and make a template of this pickguard as lots of people will be contacting him to make them. One of you who has the TMB-300 should send that one to him as well.

Awesome. Post pictures when you do put it in. Would love to see it as we have the same finish TMB100.

I honestly haven't touched it since I set it up! I figured it was going to settle after I adjusted the truss rod, and boy did it. I need to start over. Lol

good page , he seems to have had really bad luck with these basses. Good Lord!
I've seen his comments on Musicians friend and also Guitar Center. While I haven't had problems like these, it was his comments that helped me look for potential issues on mine. Thank goodness I didn't. I agree that the initial batch seems to have been rushed, new batches coming out now seem to be much better. At least the handful I've seen at various music stores near me.

Looks to be quite a bit of room in the cavity.

Still waiting on my black pickguard from Pickguardian. It's taking longer than I anticipated so my TMB-100 is sitting patiently in her case! Can't wait to get her all together and play out! I play in my church worship band on the 31st so that will be first time out! =)

Be sure to post some Pics! :bassist: I keep going between throwing a P and J SB-3 Duncan set in mine, or just getting rid of it. I do like it, an I know I won't get Poo for it. :woot: I am TO GASSY. drool
I did switch out all the pick guard and control cavity screws on my Trans Red TMB100 from the stock nickel to Matte Black. Made it easier, for my eyes, to look at. :thumbsup:
