It's so, when the previous owner wailed a bit too hard on the E string, it didn't make a huge thwack when it hit the pickup pole.

Ped, I've got one just like it so I can honestly say congratulations. Mine is an '88 and had belonged to a touring musician and shows it age and miles. But with TI Flats, look out....They'll put meat on the table. Enjoy that old work horse...… Lee
Rather pleased with this one. It’s cleaned up really nicely and sounds great. Love the tilt neck, I’ve been able to get the action spot on. The neck is straight as an arrow. Some pics:
