NBD! MIM Geddy

My first new actual Fender since my Mustang last year, and my Tony Franklin P the year before. I bought a used CIJ Geddy about ten years ago and stupidly didn’t hang on to it. Looking forward to seeing how the new MIM version compares. Unboxing coming up!

I think I’m likely to keep this one pristine stock to preserve potential resale value. I have some Tom Brantley pickups on the way, but I’m planning on using those in another Jazz bass project.

It’s a black one, btw. Not sunburst - I do like the sunburst version, though. Especially with the almost obligatory red tort pickguard. Like I said, this one will be kept stock, but the J project bass getting the Tom Brantley pickups will be satin black, as opposed to gloss, with a vintage red tort guard and the usual chrome hardware.

Now look here Mr Frampton... It's perfectly easy for somebody just to come along here to TalkBass simply claiming... that they have a bit to spare in the Geddy department, but the point is Mr. Frampton, our viewers need proof...

I have played both the MIM and MIJ...and honestly the MIJ is a much better bass.
Have had 3 GL MIJ and I was dumb to get rid of the first two (needed funds, ugh).
Fortunately for me I had a friend who was selling his and got it for a steal. It's not going anywhere.
The neck profile has a different feel on the MIM than the MIJ. Pickups have a better tone (for my liking) also.
But the bottom line is if you like it then good for you for getting it.

I have a MIM Geddy with the Brantleys...I like it better than the USA Geddy I sold. I also like the neck on the MIM better. IMO a Geddy Jazz should have a toothpick neck...the USA neck weren't no toothpick

I highly suggest installing the Tom Brantley pups in your MIM Geddy. I have Tom's pickups installed in both my CIJ Black Geddy & MIJ Sunburst Geddy. Tom makes the very best pups and is a great friend. Enjoy your Geddy!

I highly suggest installing the Tom Brantley pups in your MIM Geddy. I have Tom's pickups installed in both my CIJ Black Geddy & MIJ Sunburst Geddy. Tom makes the very best pups and is a great friend. Enjoy your Geddy!

If you do decide to put those (or any) new pickups in it, I suggest copper-sheilding in the body to help protect against any hum issues that might occur.

I’m going to use the Tom Brantley pickups in a different parts Jazz bass I’m assembling, because that’s the bass I bought them for (I don’t have another set of pickups to go in that bass). It will be very “ Geddyish” anyway - Jazz maple neck with black blocks and binding (from eBay), no-name body with black satin finish, high mass bridge, chrome Schaller lights. These are nearly all spare parts that need to be put to some use in a bass. With some nice fresh Rotosounds and my Tech 21 MP40 Sansamp, I think I’ll be able to Geddy Lee all over the place to my heart’s content.

If I like the Brantley pickups enough (I think I probably will), the Fender bass might get a set in the future.
