NBD Rickenbacker 4003SW

Today I am fortunate to be able to afford a brand new finely crafted Rickenbacker 4003SW.

Nearly 50 years ago, my mother used her hard-earned money to buy me a new Rickenbacker 4001 bass in 1978.

Unfortunately, I ran into financial hardship and had sold that beloved bass in 1998.

I am truly grateful for coming full circle as there are so many youthful memories attached to playing a Rickenbacker bass.

Congratulations and Happy New Year @ahbradot ! I know you're a fellow Ric fanatic, so I'm extra happy for you that you got your dream Ric! I told you that the third time will be the charm! 🤣

Play it in good health and have fun in this new year and beyond!

That's a nice bass. How's the neck compared to the 4001, if you can remember.

Congratulations on the new Ric. I have a similar Ric story. I saved up and bought myself a Ric 4001 in the 90's. It was a 70's bass. Not sure the exact year. 1st one I had was stolen out of our van after a gig, but insurance covered it. I got another 70s Ric to replace it, but eventually sold it for financial reasons as well. I regretted it and always wanted to get another one. I'm 2020, I pulled the trigger on my 4003w.

Great question.
I believe this 2025 iteration of the 4003SW neck is thin similar to the 4001.
I like the very silky smooth satin finish neck on the new 2025 4003SW bass as opposed to the 4001 black painted Jetglo neck.
That was an absolute clincher for me. The first time I got my hands on a Ric it was a 70s 4001. The finish on the neck felt sticky to me, and too skinny for my tastes too! My 4003 SW from 2015 has an evenly thick, almost flat backed neck, and - luckily - I love it! Horses for courses. 😁

wonderful story! My parents, God bless ‘em, bought me a Rick 4001 and a Kustom amp in 1972. It was my first bass but and I was a beginner. I was playing in my high school jazz band, so after about a year I traded it for a fretless Precision which I still have. Now, many years and basses later, I am retired and lucky enough to have disposable income. I have recently acquired a 4003s in Mapleglow and a 4003sw. The maple will keep its round wound strings, the walnut is awaiting a set of Optima flatwounds. I can now appreciate the incredible versatility of these basses!😎❤️
