NBD! Rickenbacker content..

Just picked this up. 1988 Rickenbacker 4001V63. A very nice bass, worlds different than the 2000 V63 I had a few years ago.

What's different about this one compared to the other one you played?

Nice. Love the no binding, and of course, a neck Toaster makes ALL the difference. Have fun with it.

Its lighter, the neck is narrower and very comfortable. The contours are sculpted more accurate to the original vintage 63 I think. Being an '88 makes it the third year production for these, I believe they started the V series in '85. I'd have to say that the early ones are the ones to get ahold of. The overall bass sounds really good. I can get a really nice nasty Chris Squire growl out of this one.

Congratulations! Very cool bass. Could you share with us your thoughts on the differences between the '88 & '00?

Lighter, not as chunky, very delicate feeling. It feels more hand crafted than mass produced, more accurate to the orginal I think.. The pickups are hot but balanced. The neck is very comfortable, not clubby at all. The tone is very Rickenbacker, and of course, 22 years has really put a nice patina on the mapleglo..... I tossed some D'Addario stainless steel rounds on and had no problem dialing a nice Chris Squireish sound.
