nbd: Squier content

I was lurking in the sweetwater guitar showcase and stumbled upon this gem. A new Squier VM 70's CAR Jazz bass weighing only 7 lbs 2 ounces. It plays and sounds great, I have only had to chance to bedroom practice with it. The weight just kills it for me, its so light and so easy to play, I definitely noticing i like to play it longer than my other bases. The fit is very nice and the finish in the paint is exceptional. there are a few spots that i could say could be better, but do you expect perfection from $300? I am more than pleased

Looks great. I have some heavier basses and although I never had back problems. In all honesty: I tend to grab the lighter ones more often. What do they use as a body wood on those? I have an all original '78 that is about 10lbs and a surprisingly light MIJ '70s with an ash body, that has the '60s pickup spacing. Do these Squiers have the period correct pu placement with the bridge pu closer to the bridge?

yeah, unfortunately I do have back problems, scoliosis and a broken collar bone....plus im sure 15 car accidents(not that I was driving in them all or even 1/2) didnt sit too good with my spine. I love me a light bass, it almost feels comical picking it up yet feels like all basses should be 7lbs

I couldnt find a fender anywhere near 7lbs let alone low 8's. This thing is a funk machine. All squiers arent diamonds but I have found them more similar than different, especially comparing them to most of the mim's I have tried. The candy apple finish is just gleaming with sparkles in the sunlight!

No neck dive, if anything the neck goes up. Not sure if any upgrades are needed. As it is a 70s and i love covers, im outfitting it with a bridge and pickup cover and a thumb rest...perhaps some traditional jazz knobs

Yeah, me too. I always preferred rosewood and stayed away from solid paint finishes, but now I have a black jazz with maple/black block fretboard (Geddy Lee clone) and I love the look. Now I'm gassing for a CAR/maple P-bass. I don't care so much if it doesn't have blocks, though.

I have Nr. 134. It's a great bass. Gotta love these japanes necks. Has the same Pickups as the US Vintage RI '62 but the more budget japanese electronics. Didn't change them. Bought it nearly new in 1998 when Ebay was different from today and the ebay-shop selling it didn't have a clue. They announced it as a Donald Duck bass. Noone wanted a Disney bass but me. I already had the limited Noel Redding Jazz Fender Japan released along with the Dunn. A killer bass. Wasn't so sure about the colour of the Dunn back then, now I love it. Bought a japanese Bass VI in car last year. Wasn't so sure about the colour. Now....

Great score. When I checked out the VM 70's J at a local GC, it seemed heavy to me, and I went in a different direction. All last summer, I had been GASing for a "Red Barchetta" like the OP's, and had the Gotoh 201 & Quarter Pounders ready for installation into what would be my designated beater bass. I ended up saving a bit of money by going the SX route, but am still adjusting to the different neck radius, because I am not involved in any bands or projects, right now.

I saw the most gorgeous VM 70s jazz at the Lewisville, TX store! It was the maple body with maple block neck.

The quilting on the body was high-end furniture grade. The body was three-piece, but it would take a fellow woodworker to recognize it. The figure was almost 3D, and looked like ripples on the water. My wife was even shocked, and she hates going to music stores with me.

I almost bought it, knowing I had no need for the instrument. The body was almost a piece of art.

Every natural colored vm 70s I have come across has played nice but were heavy, like 10 lb + heavy. I have had a few sx, couldnt get used to that neck either

Right for 300$ thats cheap art! Some guys really scored on here with some nice figuring in their natural maple ones.

Mine is a two piece lefty. Book matched on the back, you can't tell it's a 2-piece from the front. My neck has a wee bit of flame on the back. Great pups in the thing.

i dont know why 5 string basses suffer from not enough cool ones. There's any kind of 4 string bass in every configuration and color, so many endless options, swap-ability prospects, and vintage ones. I rarely see a cool 5 string, which is why I guess they dont last long with me.
