Exactly! At this price you're buying a mod project that may or may not be a playable instrument out of the box. You might be lucky and get a good one, but most likely you will have to spend a couple of hours finishing the work they didn't do at the factory, to keep the cost down.
And of course, if you end up spending hundreds of $$$ on upgrading the pickups, pots, hardware you would probably be better off buying a more expensive bass in the first place. Unless you buy it because you enjoy the modding process of course, or want to learn things like fret leveling/crowning, filing the nut and soldering. It would be hard to find a better modding platform for that.
I ordered a red one. Plans include a matte black guard, bridge and pickup covers, and a better set of hardware throughout (tuners, string tree, strap buttons, screws, knobs. I'll do the standard cheap-O stuff like tightening the jack, properly slotting and smoothing the nut, and making sure the frets are nicely leveled, crowned, dressed, and polished. I might dye the fretboard black, and maybe even paint all the exposed maple matte black. I usually find the stock electronics on cheap-Os to work just fine...though I do happen to have a Model P and plenty of pots and jacks just sitting here.
Clearly written by someone in a marketing role that doesn't play (much) and not reviewed/approved for release by anyone beyond more marketeers that don't play (much). IMHO. YMMV
You might. But also a, consider screwing it to a piece of wood to maintain its dimensional integrity/ keep it from warping.

Sounds like a plan, I think the matte black PG will look killer! I also find the stock electronics usually adequate for
my needs on my project basses but the pickups on this P were uninspiring so if you could let us/me know what you think about the stock p/up’s when it shows up.

You may know I am partial to jazz neck
profiles from the other thread but all-in-all it seems a very decent “starter bass”.
I respect peeps likes. I assume a neck swap wouldn't be a chore, on what otherwise looks like a good quality budget bass.
Wot's the difference betwen this and the Squier Sonic, which I note also has a 38mm nut ?They sell for a bit over 400 aussie bucks

I don’t think much other than it looks like the Sonic is Fender/Squier spec’d
as far as the pickup placement and the knob placement and of course the colors and finishes available. The Debut Series so far are only offered in matte finishes.
So basically same beer, slightly different bottle

I've never found a basic P pickup, of any cheapness level, that couldn't simply be adjusted to sound how I want it to sound by turning knobs on the amp, changing strings, etc. I'm more concerned about whether it holds up in terms of build quality – i.e. will it crap out on me at a gig? Haven't had a Squier pickup do that on me yet. Fender, yes...
just got mine. Planning to use it as a testing platform and a loaner bass for our church for our guitar players who sometimes have to fill in for me on bass, but don’t have one.
@BHaev , I'm keen to get your observations... I'm seriously considering buying one to use in our church band.

First impressions are I’m very impressed. I can’t believe it’s only $129. A couple of years ago I bought an Affinity Precision to play around with and this bass out of the box is better. The action is high but that is an easy fix. The fretwork is good - no buzzes yet that I noticed. The output seems low but I just did a quick run thru with it. Will do a proper overview this weekend. Tuners are low quality, but everything else seems usable as a gigable bass - definitely an excellent practice bass.
