NBD Steinberger XP-2

UPS Man Just dropped off the Steinberger XP-2
It has a Broken D String Jaw & already have the parts coming from Ed Roman's in Vegas
Also has a broken Leg Rest & have that coming too
Ordered a couple sets of LaBella Flat Wounds & will give it a lubricating, cleaning & a setup..
Didn't get any new pictures & my Son is in his studio playing it now with three strings
Sounds Good thru the Ashdown 300-410T

Steinberger XP-2 Ad 1985.jpg

The Serial # on this one is N1276 which dates it from 1983-1985
One of the very first XP-2s from Newburg NY
Found the mounting part of the Leg Rest in the zipper pouch of the case
Plus the two bolts I was going to have to source
Action is nice & close with the 3 round wounds
Photos above where from where the seller had it for sale before the Jaw Broke for $1899.00
Except for the one showing the broken part, Even came with that extra string too

My Son paid a Little over a Grand for it including S&H + The Parts We Ordered.
Not Counting the 2 sets of LaBella Flat Wounds
JFYI LaBella translates to "The Beautiful"

I Had a member here ask what's the current market value of a XP-2?
Researched every one I could find for sale on Reverb & eBay
XP-2s Current Market Value as of 9/1/21 is $2430 USD

He Got a Smoking Hot Deal because of that "Broken Jaw"

Can't Wait for the parts & strings to get here so I can clean it up & get it going for Him

He's Been Smiling Ear to Ear & was playing it earlier with the three strings..
Sounds Very Good with the passive EMGs Too!
"Boom Boom Boom BooooooM!"

Awesome, I remember lusting after those when they came out in the '80s!

Yeah Me Too!! I'm So happy For My Son!!
He works hard & saves his money up & buys whatever He wants..
His 30th Birthday was last week, He Ordered it the day after..

We researched & Ordered the parts first, & Someone else had it in their cart @ Reverb, So He instantly went & ordered it on his Laptop & I watched it vanish on my PC as He bought it..

I also went & looked thru that sellers other items, He also has a Chandler Pickguard that I assume came off of This XP-2 as well..
The area around the output jack is damaged on the pickguard He's Selling,
So I assume it got the cord yanked & broke the guard a bit..
I notice it has a washer under the output jack BTW.. All the factory ones I've seen did not..
Also the G string claw looks new & noticed the tuning knob stands out a Millimeter or two more than the other three, That's OCD.. It might have a thicker washer or spacer under it? See Above..
I'll have a look when the Jaw, Leg Rest & Strings Arrive from Ed Roman's & I get it setup for him..

Don @ Headless USA told Me He has a white stick on Steinberger Logo for $20, In fact I need to get with Him & Order that right now @ 2:00am.. It has a replacement Chandler Pickguard on it..

I'll probably remove it & clean the electronics with Deoxit & Shield the guard with Copper Foil Tape..
My Son Works 3rd Shift & is off Tonight & is Sleeping Now..

He'll wake up in a few & the Neighbors are gonna Hear the Steinberger.. BOOM!! HaHaHaHaHa!!
I wonder what that sound is?? It's shaking the entire house.. Rap Music..

The Ashdown 300C410T was another Amazing Score from a Local Pawn Shop..
The gauge wasn't lighting up & had scratchy pots & we bought it for a Song, It had two cold solder joints, I looked inside before we bought it & could see the dry sockets.. We had the Ibanez with us & tried it first..
Shook the whole place with Geezers Solo before NIB..
In fact we had a hell of a time getting it in the back seat of the VW Beetle..
Cleaned the pots with Deoxit & soldered those two joints & it's 100%

Just a Few in the arsenal.. Steinberger can sit in this stand too!!
Above Ovation, Ibanez SR300, Charvel 2B, Gibson Blueshawk & Nighthawk + PRS CE22 & Silvertone Lap Steel.
He has many many more.. He's a Tone Searcher..

Here's what His Jackson JPB-7 Bass Looks Like, His is Emerald Green with Gold Flake.
It was a 1995 NAAM Show Guitar Serial #950005 = #5 & is Fretless.. the Marlaux Lawsuit Model.. M-Wha!!
Paid $229 For that Fantastic Jackson Bass & $100 for The Ibanez SR300..

Good Evening Gents!!

Hey I forgot about this thread but found it searching for Steinberger XP-2 & thought I'd add a few photos I took right after fixing the string jaw & leg rest plus installed LaBella S500L Flat Wounds on The Burger.
Ordered two sets from Ed Roman's for the Future..
You don't come across double ball end Steinberger Flat Wound Bass Strings Every Day..
Plus have a few photos with it apart changing the Jaw/Claw..
Blue tape was to mark the intonation points.
Still need to get the white Steinberger Logo or have a local sign company make me one from vinyl..

Steinberger Logo White TM Removed.jpg

Here's that Logo for anyone else looking for it in a JPEG
It's 2 7/8" x 3/8" for size..

Should go up to the sign company & see how much
Might have a sheet of them made & sell them on Reverb

Congrats on an excellent bass! It looked a bit too "radical' for me personally so I went with the sister XM-2. It is a bit different sounding than my XL-2 with that maple body but I really like it. i also keep LaBella flats on it and it roars.
Enjoy your new Steiny!!

Thanks Guys!!

I know that We have all had the moment in life that was like "It Will Be Mine, Oh Yes!!"
That happened to me in 1984/85 when I was a Senior in High School & could never afford a Steinberger
I saw a ad in Guitar World & later a show on PBS in 1988 about Steinberger Sound
Steinberger - Bing video
NOTE: Every bench has a bucket of water for wet sanding
Also at the very start there is a lady with a air grinder making a hole in the end of the headstock I guess to mount the end piece of the headstock & then fills it with epoxy..
You also see a Very Young Jeff Babicz in there..

Hope He Keeps that XP-2 Steinberger & Remembers his 30th Birthday getting it..

I loved the XL2 from the first moment I saw one, but didn't ever believe I'd be able to afford one, as I was still paying off my Alembic Distillate at the time. Then one night, my wife took me onto a surprise trip into the city and we went into a music store and she presented me with my XL2. We couldn't afford it at all but she wanted me to have it so we found a way to pay for the rest of it. I still have it and would rather starve or live in my car than part with it. It's all I have left of her and to this day, it's probably still the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me.

That was fascinating to watch. Given the advances in composites in the following decades, I wonder what they'd look like today and how they'd be made.

I know this is an old thread, but I need to get some parts for my Q4. Some folks have had issues dealing with Ed Roman in the past, mostly related to mods on "vintage" guitars.

Just curious if you got what you wanted from him, when you wanted it...

Thanks...
YES...
In fact they had exactly the bridge claw we needed + a leg rest & 2 sets of LaBella strings too..
It was BOB IIRC in parts that helped me out
Ed Roman passed away & his daughter now runs Ed Roman's Guitars in Las Vegas
Remember that Ed once worked for Ned Steinberger & has a huge stash of parts in their inventory, see photo in the link below
Can't tell you about the Q4 but I think it's parts are the same as the XP-2 SO~~~
I took photos of the exact parts I needed & emailed them to Bob & called him 10 minutes later & he sent the parts out that very day & got them quickly here near Louisville KY...
Steinberger Parts
Call (702) 597-0147 ask for Bob in the parts department & then ask away
Good Luck thedukeofno

Just yesterday I applied a water slide decal on the chandler pickguard of the Steinberger logo I bought on eBay from overseas & it worked out fantastic

I also found a Steinberger Spirit Gig Bag Brand New near Chicago for like $25 shipped around Christmas & Just recently was at a Pawn Shop & got a hard case for $20 from a pile of stuff that never seems to get sold with the guitars...
We have the original gig bag but its zipper is goofed so I went looking for something better & found it..
