I agree with others that you're overthinking this deal. This is a nice bass at a killer price - - and when you see a good deal, you should go after it. Also as others have pointed out, if the bass doesn't play or sound right to you, you'll easily be able to turn it around and get your money back. Grab this deal before someone else does!
If the finish isn't particularly attractive in person I'd be tempted to send that over to Marty Bell, I had a Stingray refinished there and it looks great...
This. That isn't EBMM-quality transparent-finish grain matching.
But a good price, nevertheless.
I'd say it's a refinish too. Looking under the light, the gloss looks like there's a lot of orange peel. It doesn't look like a swamp ash body either, I'd say poplar. Musicman have, on a few occasions (including this year!) if I've read correctly, stopped using swamp ash due to shortages, so consequently moved to poplar and stopped offering natural finishes. Poplar's a similar weight to swamp ash too if I'm not mistaken.
The price difference from an unmolested one would buy a lot of paint... 
I agree with the general consensus here that even if it is a refin it's more than a worthwhile purchase at $600 (especially since I love SR5s).

Well, I got the serial off the neck plate that he photographed—it wasn't conveyed to me in his ad or in the private messages we exchanged.
Funny you should mention that. I was thinking I might flip the $600 SR5 to help me save up for a SR5 Special.
Score! The finish has been stripped and not replaced so it'll need a new one. I gave him $500 and now she is mine with the OHSC.

If you're going to refin it or anything, make sure you show us the finished product!
Gaze along the surface of the back of the bass. Normal finishes are flat and level, like a mirror or a pond with no wind. This has some rippling, probably due to the belt sander treatment it had to endure.
