If you just want it black again, a good auto painter would probably shoot it black and clear it for a very reasonable price.

I'm sure they'd prime it as well. All work reflected in the price of course.
The nice thing about black is there's so many black cars that they have it in their guns all the time. Just ask them to shoot your bass the next time they do. It costs them almost nothing in materials.
The bass and I made the journey from Northern Virginia across the Potomac River and back home to Maryland.
The case is in perfect shape! She needs a neck cleaning but some Ernie Ball cleaning wipes I have on hand should take care of that. The strings are DR Black Beauties, I believe. Electronics work perfectly with no scratchiness. The body has definitely been stripped and spot filled with what looks like CA glue at certain points. Have not tried the truss rod yet but I do not anticipate a problem there. No obvious signs of fret wear at all. The neck has no major marks on it and is a nice deep brown shade (although that may lighten after cleaning). Everything feels comfortably familiar. The G string does seem to drop off the edge of the fingerboard sometimes but maybe I can correct that by resetting the neck inside its pocket. We shall see. A shim will likely be necessary but that is nothing unusual.
The most exciting thing so far is that she appears to be lighter than my existing 2001 EBMM StingRay 5H.
I will attempt to get a measurement of the weight shortly as well as some new pictures.

I think the first five-string StingRays were built in 1988; the birthdate of this bass is June 29, 1998. Older than some, younger than others.
This is the other StingRay 5H that I own, an older brother to the new one. Posting its picture for the heck of it. This one is a 2001 in Honeyburst and it's a gem.
The more I ponder it, I'm thinking that Charcoal Sparkle would be an excellent refinishing choice for the "new" bass.

I agree with you guys that a good paint job would do this bass a world of good. Unfortunately, a pro job will cost me probably $300-$400 after all the shipping, leaving me with $900 invested for a bass worth about $900. So it sort of destroys any added equity in the bass I might otherwise be gaining. Some guys or gals would opt for a rattlecan finish, but I'm not a good candidate for that.

You may get your wish as I am presently enamored of Charcoal Sparkle.
I like the Sledge Gray finish on that MM Sabre somebody is selling too.
