NBD - Tune

Heard about Tune, mostly the Bass Maniac way back, but never saw any in person. Every now and then I'd see one in the TB Classifieds and they were intriguing but didn't seem to fit any bands I was in or something. Maybe it's the recent purchase of my all time fave Steinberger XQ or just wanting a bass for me, not a band, that led to me to this funky, futuristic one. Got to try one at a local GC but it was kinda beat up and remembered seeing one in silver. A week later found this one on the GC used site! MIK and bargain price for what you get. Love the neck and the unique body shape which matches its unique tone. Really like the Jack placement too. Stoked!

Not the greatest pics but this is one NBD that I was too excited to share. Made myself a new avatar too.

Also, does anyone know the best way to straighten out the plastic truss rod cover?

Congrats on the new bass - looks cool! The jack looks recessed like on Ibanez SR.
Yup similar but tucked up even higher towards the bridge and along the edge rather than the front. Sometimes I like to sit on the floor and play and always liked right angle plugs for that. Now it’s completely out of the way no matter straight or right angle plug.

Also, does anyone know the best way to straighten out the plastic truss rod cover?
Very cool TWX51. Congratulations

Easiest way to straighten the TRC out is heat. If it was a plain cover I'd suggest soaking in hot water but that's risky when there's the gold logo. Leave it in the sun instead , bend it while it's soft.

Never heard of Tune. Looks very nioce. Sound wise what does it compare to?

Hi-fi would probably be the first thing many say about Tunes. I’d definitely agree with this one, it also has a nice natural compression to it. I think the pickups, pickup placement and electronics are a big part of the sound. I’ve heard people say their is a similarity to a Warwick them because of the rearward position of the pickups but I’ve never spent too much time on a Thumb. I’ve only owned an older Fortress and like other Warwicks I’ve picked up they seemed more woody and growly, whereas this is perhaps drier and hi-fi. Yet, I don’t find it sterile or generic, there is some bark and character out of the pickups/placement and I’m finding new sounds between the blend and EQ. Not everyone’s bag and probably the furthest thing from vintage warmth but as a complement to my dub reggae machine - a graphite neck Steinberger w/ EMGs and flats - this thing is a perfect w/ rounds for R&B, hip hop, gospel and all around funkiness.

TUNE Official Web Site - Tune Guitar Maniac (rim.or.jp)

Translate & check out the Galleries for some eye candy. TUNE/PHOENIX is a major player amongst Japan's many fine builders, and they are really superb instruments.

Here's mine, from the Custom Gallery, a TWB-4 Custom HYB-II WN "Shelby Cobra":

I've had this bass for several years now, and it brings it. Top-tier build quality & tone all around.

Very nice lines on that instrument! Never seen or heard of but looks cool.
For the truss rod cover, I would never recommend what ‘you’ should do but, if it were mine…
I would set the cover face down on my granite counter top then lay a kitchen towel over it and then I’d boil a very large pot of water and set right on top for a couple of hours until the water cooled to room temperature. Never had to do it myself but it seems like a safe approach.
