NBD: Univox Professional P bass

Got it yesterday. It came with original case and Univox U4100 combo. Other than some general info such as made by Matsumoku in '70ies didn't find much about it.

The pickup seems to be DiMarzio. I've seen photos of couple of other Professional bases and they seem to have same looking pickups too. I don't know if was stock pickup or someone replaced original some time ago. The action was bit high, but truss rod works and I made some adjustment. Now awaiting delivery of TI flats to hear how this old bass sounds.

Very cool! If it has "Steel Adjustable Neck" on the neckplate, that's good Matsumoku tell. Is the body solid wood or plywood? In any case, it looks great and you can't go wrong with TI flats on a P bass. I recommend D'Addario tapes, too!

Wild guess is maybe mahogany.
I've had mahogany G&L and Yamaha basses. Seems similar looking..

A lot of natural MIJ P basses use Sen, aka Japanese Ash (thought it's not actually in the ash family, IIRC).

Nice score. Regarding the pickups. IIRC Schaller used to make a set of pickups that looked exactly like the diMarzio pickups. I've seen them come up for sale from time to time. They were called the "PBX" model. Possibly that's what's in the Univox?

With the extra ceramic magnets and the adjustable Allen pole pieces it reminds me of DiMarzio’s. But it could also be the Schaller PBX 236’ers. Whatever they are, they look like they could get snarky

PS the Schallers’ come in cream too.

Those certainly look like a Schaller PBX. Although, I admit I haven't seen a pair in quite some time . If they were DiMarzio model P's they would have their stickers on the bottom of them. I have also seen the PBX with a sticker on the bottom as well. Usually it would say that they were made in Germany. Or it could be just a generic ceramic magnet pickup that was epoxied into a plastic case. If they are the Schaller models they will be pretty quiet cuz those had good shielding on them.
