NBD x2 - Fender American Original Content

I sold all my other basses and purchased these 2. You can't beat the classics!

I've actually had them for a few weeks, but now they are both fine-tuned machines with the desired strings, setup, etc.

Got the P as a Demo from SW for about 1600, and the Jazz locally for 1400 (!!), so great deals on both and made about 600 selling my other stuff in the process.

Both under 9 lbs, lush, dark rosewood... perfect in every way possible. Chromes on the P, TIs on the J, both setup crazy low with the 9.5 radius. Amazing. What more can you say?

I don't understand why people scoff at these compared to the AVRI line. They are EXACTLY the same minus the modern radius, which is a plus in my book. I owned an AVRI 63 Precision and this feels better.

Those are sweet! I have an old ('98?) AVRI jazz and there's definitely something to it. The tone has a lot of character. I also have an AO strat and it's nicer than my old jazz bass in many ways - I would love to find an AO precision someday.

You can get a really great deal if you keep looking. The Precision is amazing.

Can't say much as I agree 100%. I'm slowly getting rid of most of my basses and will end up with these two.

Nice! yea, Leo got it right early on (and then again with the Stingray). I would have saved a lot of money over the last few years just going straight for the AO P and J.

That's awesome! Congrats, x2! I too liked the American Original series. I came close to getting the jazz but could never make up my mind between the 60s and 70s version. It seems you can still find these as new old stock or the occasional one that hasn't sold. Plenty of used options as well. These do have something special to their sound. I recently played a used 60s jazz in Candy Apple Red and it had me reaching for my wallet.....almost.

Yea it was very hard to decide 60s or 70s. The 70s are harder to find but one day if the right one comes along I’ll probably switch it out. This is a little bit too close to the precision, but not that that’s a bad thing.

I don't know about the P but the AO Jazz has some of the nicest sounding pickups I've ever heard in a Fender. Congrats.

I think the American Original basses got a little bit of a muted reception on here after the previous AVRI models were so well loved, but I think they stand up in their own right. Enjoy your new basses!

Glad you like it! My only experience with the American Original line was a Candy Apple Red Jazz. It was very beautiful.

And considering the Custom Shop puts out so many "1957" and "1963" basses with 9.5 radius necks...

SNAP - I have those very same American Original basses myself - surf green P, sunburst J. Brilliant instruments that compare very well to my CS basses.

My only mild criticism of my surf green AO P-bass is that I think Fender missed a trick by not pairing it with a mint pickguard. I eventually swapped the guard on mine and love it - mint green just seems a bit more… 60s to me. Great bass nonetheless.
