It's been many moons since I played a T-40... so I don't remember what they're like.

Sonically, do they resemble other basses? Or are they completely different from anything else?

Aside from "heavy," what do they feel like? Big chunky necks?

Thanks for the insight.

Im posting a video below but I do not agree with many of the emulations he is claiming in it -- but it is a good video to hear different voicings a T-40 can do. It can get very Ric-like and I think I get closer to one on a T-40 than this video shows

The one bass it mimics almost dead perfect is the Alembic Spoiler and I only know this from owning one. Theres another TB poster on here who has had both instruments and agrees with this but I forgot who it was.

To me, they sound very full and rich, like the low strings on a piano but very unique, mainly due the massive pickups, the odd wiring, and especially the pickup placement. The more I play this one, the more Im starting to feel like this is the best one Ive had. The neck on this one feels much thinner than my previous T40 and @Bass V is absolutely right that it seems this one is definitely lighter.....not really that bad as far as T-40s go

Decades ago when I was doing a lot of independent studio work, there was a country studio that always requested my T-40

Peavey T-40......Wrong knobs. Neck and saddles need a tweak or two but already very close to how i like them setup playability wise. That is all

Who cares about knobs anyway? And, I’ve bought more than a few instruments that needed some tweaking. My Warwick corvette that I bought used at 25% off retail, and sellers today are asking for as much as $800 more than what I paid for it.

That is a solid buy on your part. Congrats.

Spazz covered it pretty well above IMO, but as a long time T-40 player, I tend to think of them as a mix between a jazz bass and a 70’s Gibson, like a ripper or grabber. They get touted as being good emulators of other basses (which as the video shows, they’re decent enough chameleons if you want to do that), but I think their tone is a unique thing all its own.

The way the tone knob works to shunt the pickups is a secret sauce, something about the way it can alter the harmonic balance depending on which pickup you roll off, how far, etc is really unique.

Neck wise, they are pretty big, but I’d imagine if you can comfortably play a P-bass you won’t find it too crazy. Everything on these basses is overbuilt and kinda bulky, but that’s part of the charm if you ask me!

I never had much luck finessing the humbucker to single coil fade-in via the tone controls. I ran everything wide open, both pickups on, and played with a pick and Rotosounds (the hot ticket back then), it would cut through anything and everything.
