NCAA Football - 2011

OK Stanky, since you're back and this just came out--they're seriously building a statue for a guy who was at Auburn for less than a year when the investigation isn't really over yet? They can't build them for the other two guys, then wait a year or two first?

More importantly who builds a statue for a guy that played 1 year for you?

Well honestly I believe that nothing else will surface from this case. I believe that there was DEFINITELY wrongdoing by Cecil Newton but not by Cam or Auburn University. I'm actually okay with the statue as well but I would MUCH rather it be Gene Chizik but Cam is what made that season happen. He utilized the good amount of talent around him and showed his personal talents to put together what is arguably one of the best individual performances in college football history. College football is religion in Auburn and all around the southeast and I definitely have no argument with putting up a Cam Newton statue.

Of course I AM wearing a #2 AU jersey right now so maybe i'm a little biased. :D

I think that comment was more a reflection on Jay Jacobs than it was on Auburn. He's a rookie in a big position, and just doesn't choose his words well at times. Auburn won't be putting up a Cam statue anytime soon. It was stupid for him to say what he did, innocent or not.

It's not so much the statue itself as it is discussing it at this point when so much conspiracy surrounds Newton and Auburn. I think his comments were just a way for him to demonstrate that he isn't worried about anything. I just don't think that is a good way to do that, but it's really not a big deal. If Auburn wants to build statues for their Heisman winners, that's okay. Few players deserve one more than Bo Jackson IMHO, or Pat Sullivan for that matter. I don't think Cam Newton will support Auburn the way those two have though, and he's not out of the weeds just yet either.

Did you guys hear about Aaron Douglas? He was a Tennessee All-American (I believe as a freshman) tackle, he left the Vols and went to a juco, but had transferred to Alabama for this season. I remember him as a Vol. Tons of potential and he was playing up to it as a freshman.

Anyways, he was found dead in a home in Florida. Not his home as far as I can tell, and it was after partying earlier in the evening. Sucks all around. :(

Yeah. Quite a shame. I haven't read any news since the day it happened, but someone was saying that he had been having bouts of depression. Hope this was an accident and not the result of a poor choice.

This ESPN insider put out his annual "freaks list" of workout warriors. Here's #1 on the list.:D (Sure hope he can stay healthy this year.)

1. Jeff Demps, RB, Florida Gators
The term "world-class speed" gets tossed around a lot. Demps legitimately has it, as he is a contender to make the 2012 London Olympics as a sprinter. Before enrolling at Florida, Demps shared the world 100-meter junior record with a time of 10.01, enabling him to get a spot at the 2008 U.S. Olympic trials. Since becoming a Gator, he has clocked two sub-10-second 100-meter times (both were wind-aided), and he has continued to get faster. He isn't just the fastest man in college football; he's also the fastest man in college sports.

Demps -- who led the Gators in rushing last season with 551 yards despite missing some time due to a foot injury -- arrived at Florida weighing 170 pounds, and is expected to play this fall at 188. Gators strength coach Mickey Marotti says the back can squat "an ungodly amount of weight." And despite the added pounds, Demps has gotten faster. "He was a 10.1 guy, is now a 9.9 guy and probably will be a 9.8 guy," said Marotti, who adds that Demps has really improved his acceleration.

Demps isn't actually in the top five Gators when it comes to his first 10 yards. Teammate Chris Rainey's is tops, with a 1.49 10-yard split (Demps is at 1.57), but it's Demps' closing speed that is jaw-dropping. His "flying 20" -- which the Gators gauge as a player's electronic time for the final 20 yards of his 40 -- is a blistering 1.76 seconds. (Both Rainey and former Gators speedster Percy Harvin measured in the 1.8s.)

Ask Marotti about what the freakiest thing about Demps is, though, and you may be surprised.

"It's his work ethic and his motor," Marotti said. "It's really something special. From the time he showed up here through today, it's always full-go. This is an overachieving guy that has a lot of gifts. He has an energy and enthusiasm for everything. People feed off him. They love to be around him. He's the hardest-working guy on our football team and I can't speak for our track coach, but I believe he's probably the hardest working guy on our track team too."

Big Ten considers proposal to help athletes cover living expenses - ESPN.

I like the idea, and it is overdue if you ask me. But as Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany mentions, not all schools could afford to help cover those expenses. So that could lead to a competitive advantage to the wealthy conferences. At least someone is seriously considering the option and talking about it.

I'd love to be on the sideline during a practice when Demps is clocking those kinds of speeds. It's really hard to appreciate that kind of speed until you see it up close and in person. That's crazy fast.

Ah, the NCAA...it can arbitrarily impose all matter of rules, regulations, punishments and sanctions upon individual schools, but it has no role in the BCS, and has little or no influence over conference realignment, TV deals, etc. At least we know they're very good at passing the buck. :rollno:

Wow, that is just incredibly pathetic. How does he even look at himself in the mirror after claiming that?

Former Gator RB Mike Blakely ends up at Auburn, which some people consider a surprise. I don't as I believe it was down to Auburn and Florida when he was recruited.

I also read rumblings that Tate Forcier is looking at Auburn.
