NCAA Week 14

it's conference championship time!

sec, acc, big 12, de facto pac 10 and big east. ...also some other ones that don't matter. :D

florida vs. alabama: the one i've been waiting for since last season! it's going to be a close, hard fought game. charlie strong and the gators d are going to force mcelroy to win it for bama, but the gators secondary doesn't allow much. bama's d forces the florida backs to beat them between the tackles, and no one on uf breaks 70 yards. this is a game where one player taking even one down off could cost his team the game. in the end, tebow's indefatigability proves too much for this year's iteration of the tide to handle. florida 17, alabama 14.

georgia tech beats clemson. cj spiller's exhausted and the defense isn't stopping the BEEEES triple option, nesbitt or no nesbitt.

texas vs nebraska: nebraska gives the longhorns four quarters of full effort but come up short. i'm rooting for the huskers, though, in hopes of florida playing tcu for the glass trophy.

oregon beats oregon state in impressive fashion. (remember last season?) 42-10, mighty ducks.

cincinnati beats pittsburgh in a shootout.

also, cal beats washington, and the random number generator that determines usf's fate draws another "0" against uconn. :(

Mike, I've known about the Rocky Mountain Gator Club for years through my father (who lives here in Denver). I just rarely happen to be here when the Gators are playing. Wish I'd known you were out here, I would've given you the heads-up. Jackson's is a great sports bar right across the street from Coors Field, the Gator Club commandeers the second floor. (It was SRO 45 minutes before kickoff, and they claim the turnout was a little light for the FSU game.) Next time, definitely check it out--just make sure to get there at least an hour before kickoff!

Oh, that ACC. Both teams going to the conference championship game get beaten (in one case, quite handily) by their in-state rivals, which are middle-tier teams in the SEC with 4-4 and 3-5 conference records. Maybe the best teams from the Big East and the ACC should form a conference, 'cause they surely deserve only one BCS slot between them.

yeah, that's definitely true... except who'd be the good ACC? teams? :D

even though this is a relatively "down" year for the big east (especially in perception), big east teams usually do great in bowl games.

I'm still on vacation and I have to think some more about the SEC title game. But I eagerly anticipate hearing about all those indicators that favor Bama. Clearly, those indicators do not include total offense (scoring or yardage), rushing offense, yards per carry, passing offense, passing efficiency, total defense (scoring or yardage) or passing defense. (Bama does have an edge in rushing defense and turnover margin.)

:D

True enough. But I think Cincy's ripe for the picking this year, given the shootouts they've been involved in.

I'm always in favor of seeing a massive loss thrown at Texas, so call me a Huskers fan this week! (besides, they wanted me to come to Lincoln for MS work) Honestly, Texas hasn't played a defense like Nebraska's all season, so they do stand a very good chance at pulling the upset.

Just got home from a long, 4 day weekend at my in-laws. I don't have time to go through all my thoughts on the game for now. As for indicators, I am referring to common opponents, which I willing admit I haven't updated in the last 3-4 weeks. Last I looked, Bama had on average scored more against those teams than Florida, and allowed less yardarge, scoring, etc.

Of course, all that really matters in any game is the game plan itself, and how well it's executed. That makes this game hard to predict to say the least. As it stands tonight, I'm more skeptical about this game than I have been at other times this season. I'm not predicting anything until I know for sure what kind of shape Ingram will be in. I'll talk strategy and matchups all week, but chances are I won't make any prediciton until Friday.

You got parts of this right....... The Huskers are the best defense Texas has played this season, But they might only need a field goal to win.

Nebraska's offense is inept.......

And that would make Auburn's season look better because?

Oh yeah, Bama by 10!

Who said anything about Auburn? I saw the game my boys played on Friday. Alabama got dominated until the last few minutes of the game. A quote from a number of Bama friends of mine, "The scoreboard didn't show it but you guys kicked our asses." I agree. But what matters at the end of the day is the W and you guys have it so I tip my hat to you. It was a fight.

Florida and Bama's offense is about on the same page but Florida's defense is going to be what wins this game. Bama will not have an answer for that defense.

It could be closer than I think but I still say Gators by 14.

Auburn played a totally inspired game fueled by a week off, and short week for Bama with Thanksgiving in the middle, and nothing else to really look forward to this season. Oh and your team had the home field advantage too. We have Florida next week and the Auburn game was not the most important game of the season for us. Go back and look at common opponents of Florida and Bama, and I think you will see a pretty even match up. Just because you want it to be, doesn't make it so. This one will be close, with the edge to Bama against the over confident Florida.

This is laughable. Perhaps you should check the drive charts. Auburn had many drives for negative yardage all through the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters. Rushing yardage was like 30 or something in those quarters. Take away the one lucky pass bomb we gave you in the 3rd quarter when we blew that pass coverage by putting a strong safety on your best reciever, and your pass yardage is also quite low.

Again, the score during the last 3 quarters was 26-7 BAMA. You call that domination? Not even close. Yeah, the game was tight because of two quick scoring attempts off of trick plays early in the game. Those were HUGE gambles, and they just happened to pay off. Kudos on that, but that is still far from domination. It was a fight...a fight for you guys to hold on to an early lead that you couldn't sustain even though you tried all your trick plays again (they were shut down), and a fight for us to make up for them working early on. Still not domination.

i would also link to this week's "edsbs the magazine" cover, but... you'll have to check it out yourself. the "cover story" (it's not really a magazine...) is "SIX 7-5 SEC TEAMS TO SPLIT ACC TITLE."

:D:D:D:bawl::D:D:D

(laughing so hard tears stream down face.)

alright, i'll try and do some stats searches on the common opponents florida and alabama played. like eublet said, this doesn't in any way determine who wins on saturday, but it's the best we've got.

Tennessee:

@Florida: 13-23
@Alabama: 10-12

Kentucky:

Florida: 7-41
Alabama: 20-38

LSU:

Florida: 3-13
@Alabama: 15-24

Arkansas:

@Florida: 20-23
@Alabama: 7-35

Miss State:

Florida: 19-29
Alabama: 3-31

South Carolina:

Florida: 14-24
@Alabama: 6-20

someone else will have to track down the yards of offense gained and given up, since i can't find it. also, i didn't put in the chronology, but that's easy enough to see. removing the chronological aspect, it looks like out of the six common opponents, florida performed better against three and alabama performed better against the other three. considering that two of those are the horrible games florida played against arkansas and mississippi state, i'm not too worried, since florida seems to have gotten it together since then.

Yes!!! YEs!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SECCG Week.

For the second year in a row, this here is the real NCG. Whoever wins Saturday in the GeorgiaDome will go on to defeat their opponent in the "other" NCG.

Tebow is the difference in this game. He is going to will the Gators to victory at any cost. Without Tebow, this game is a complete toss-up in my mind. You can bottle up Tebow statistically, but you can't bottle up his emotions and the dramatic effect he has on his teammates. There is simply no answer for that, no way to stop it.
