Neck Plate?

Im EXTREEEEEEMMMLLYY sorry if this thread has been done, especially if its been in overkilled, but i couldnt find it. All i am wondering is if i need a neck plate for the bass i am building. I am building the body and using a neck off of a fretless Yamaha that had come with a neck plate, but i would much rather it without, mostly for the awsome looks! Any advantages or disadvantages to this if its even possible?

the idea of the neck plate is to dispearse pressure from the neck bolts across a wider and more stable area...it's not necessary, but if you plan to bolt the neck on, you might want to at least use washers or neck bolt ferrules to give the bolt a stable base to mount to, or it could tear up the body wood, or at worst crack the body wood at a grain.

There are commercial basses that don't have a neck plate, such as warwick, but it seems they use a special washer like a cup washer. You can see like [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] Anyone know exactly what they use?

Hi.

If the ferrules prove to be a hard to find items, Ibanez among other Japanese manufacturers use(d) a thick countersunk washer. A DIY approach with those might be easier if a lathe is not available.

Countersunk washers look pretty darned good. Warmoth has them.

Might want to grab your screws there too, just to be sure they match properly.

I used those on my bass, and they look awesome. Only caveat is that you'll need a 15mm forstner bit. They look kind of sloppy if the hole isn't exactly that size.
