Need a Combo

Dang... a JBL K140, 8 ohms, was in it. I don't think this is original. Nor do I think this is optimal for use with the amp- tho' I could be wrong.

I will admit, a little sheepishly, to being somewhat delighted to find such a prize in this old Crackerjack box, however!

Nice condition cosmetically. You are right, that K140 is not original. Ask around on TB for a good replacement.

@DukeLeJeune is probably the guy to ask.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I'd trust JimmyM's advice over mine when it comes to putting new woofers in vintage combo amps and cabs.

My thinking is, Delta 15A, and contact Eminence's [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] to see if they can do a custom unit with the voice coil tailored to this application (maybe 4 ohms, maybe a little lighter and a little longer than normal, since thermal demands won't be as great but x-max is more of a consideration).

Edit: see my post below.

Thanks @Jim Carr !
There are some other good Eminence drivers that I have been studying (based upon recommendations from Leland Crooks) as possible replacements for the Sunn Magna 158's in my 215BH.

Here they are:

Speaker Detail | Eminence Speaker Delta Pro 15A
Speaker Detail | Eminence Speaker Kappa Pro 15A
[Invalid or Expired Link Removed] Legend CB 158

Haven't made up my mind, but I would bet that one of these would fit the bill. You cab can pretty easily be measured and internal volume/port size entered into WinISD. This is the one time I wish I had a windoze box.

That Delta 15A has been rec' d also in recent conversation, but I'm going to try doing a reconed on the JBL I've got here. It's going to be an experiment, I'm in no hurry, and mean to have fun with this.
Besides, I have the JBL!

Ear is still to the wall as I go...

Check this post: Acoustic 136 new 15" speaker

Bill's comment follows here.

"Kappa and Kappalites aren't a good choice here, the amp doesn't have enough power to make use of their excursion. What's called for is a higher Qts/Vas driver, which is similar to what was in there originally. You'll get a midbass response hump, which is what it takes for giggable levels with 100w. The Beta 15 and Delta 15 are the best bets. Better lows with the Beta 15, stronger mids with the Delta 15."

This is a case where getting a modern super high excursion 15" is probably not the best way to go. You need efficiency. BTW, the original driver was an Eminence custom driver. If you call them or contact their CS, you might get a recommendation for a replacement that matches or exceeds the original.

Interesting, yes I'll do it. Getting "The sound" out of the old Acoustic was the original point of having it, after all. Thanks for posting, Jim.
My pleasure.

Based on a cursory look, Eminence may have no efficient 4 ohm alternatives. I'd talk to them.
