Need a very light bass , help

Email Tom Clement. Let him know you need a light well balanced bass. He made me a 5 string fretless that was under 8 lbs. Dude knows how to make a great playing, sounding and looking bass for sure. And hew knows how to keep them light.

If the OP is not into violin shaped basses, a Hofner Club bass would be a good choice IMO. Hofners are very light, Icon without the center block of the Contemporary might be even lighter.

If it's a Fender-type that you would prefer, a P-bass Lyte is the lightest Fender I've played: just over 7 lbs.

Either an Icon or a P-lyte can be found (Fender, used) in the 300 -400 range.

It really depends on sound. Semi acoustic basses have a very different sound to solid bodies. Great if it's what you want.

But shorter scale probably helps. Easier to play. Fender do a short scale solid body, the Mustang. Don't know what it weighs.

You can also look at shaving weight off whatever you play by lighter aftermarket hardware, etc.

Edit 7.6lb

Thanks for the tip, I was thinking call Nino tomorrow and see if he can do something for me.

Nino does great work for sure.

Check out Tom's website. He has lots of pics with weight included. If you email him you usually get a pretty fast response too.

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed] this one is 7.5lbs!
I don't work for Tom. Just a very satisfied customer.

Good luck with the back too. Recently had my first unexpected back problem and it was terrible. Hopefully the doc can figure something out for you.

x2 on the idea of getting a custom built bass. I have a similar problem and solved it quite well with a lightweight Ibanez SR505, but I came very close to looking for, or eventually building a chambered hollowbody 33" scale...

Warmoth would be able to give you a routed/chambered body with a laminated top in a Jazz shape. Invalid Link Removed

You could explain to them your needs and they can do one for you using the lightest slab of wood they can find in their shop. For some extra dosh, they'll probably chamber one of the other body shapes they offer. From the stock bodies on the Warmoth site, they even list the weight of the body.

Then pair it up with a graphite neck from Moses: P, J & MM styles in 4 or 5 string (also available from Allparts) and even some 6er options. Invalid Link Removed

Or you could order an Afterburner II from Dingwall, and tell Sheldon to do a little extra chambering. ;)

Many of the previously suggested basses I have not played. Interesting read.

I have played a few Dingwalls. The first one I picked up, I almost threw it through the ceiling! haha! BassCentral has a Dingwall 4 @ 7lbs and a Dingwall 5 @ 7.5lbs. They are both Dingwall ABZs.

Good luck!

6.1 lbs. Tone for days.

There's also those straps always advertised in the back of the guitar mags, double strap that goes across both shoulders. Then there's the Dare strap... lots of stuff about playing posture and what not if you google it.

+1. This is a great place to start.

I've had stellar results with yoga, as well. I had neck/shoulder issues that were really affecting my tendons and felt like wrist/carpal tunnel issues. Some good stretching, strengthening and relaxation cleaned it right up. Yoga can look like a sissy/hippie pastime, but the right instructor can do wonders for relieving tension and strengthening.

It's ironic that I just weighed all my basses and guitars earlier today and this thread is on TB!

The 3 basses:
Spector Euro5LX - 10.5 lbs.
Spector ReBop4 - 7.5 lbs.
Fender MIA Precision - 9.5 lbs.

The weight of the Precision surprised me since it's only 1 pound lighter that the 5 string, through-neck Euro5LX.

As for the guitars (for comparison):
Squier Avril Lavigne signature Telecaster - 7.5 lbs
Jedson F907 Acoustic Guitar - 4 lbs.

Another surprise, the Tele and ReBop are the same weight. Slab vs. fully carved/curved bodies makes a big difference.

For a high tech option with a little (or a lot) more flair than a Steinberger...

Very sexy for a headless bass. I'd have one in my bass arsenal if I played slabs (and had money).

As others have mentioned, those Kalas are cool.

I still think the Warmoth is a good option. Custom laminate top in a fancy wood with 20% weight savings. Custom bass on the cheap!

+1 on YOGA!
