Need opinion: Trace Elliot AH400

My 250 of the same era is routinely said to be way ballsy for 250W. They put big capacitors in the power supply so it slams out peaks no problem. Higher rated amps don't punch like mine.

The EQ is great, trim out flappy low end and tailor the rest of the tone to the nth. The EQ balance control lets you make a quick change from dub to rock in one motion.

The compressors can squish or be transparent, independent on lows and highs, neato!

Watch out with the 5 string. Cab is probably tuned similar to my 1518, it can't handle 30Hz. It only gets going at 60hz, better than most cabs of the day and plenty of modern ones too. You want to cut 30 and 40 and probably not boost 60hz.

The 1048H is a great cab but it's f*cking insanely heavy for its rating.

I'd say get it if you love the Trace tone. Being a metal player primarily I'm not sure it would be my first choice but there's no doubt it's a versatile unit.

My actual cab is a Traynor YC-810 "Big B", IIRC I saw somewhere that it was rated to be around 140lbs, but can't find the source. Still, in this particular case, my back is thanking me ahaha

Talked to the bassist that share my rehearsal place. He recently joined the band I share the place with, he haven't brought his stack in, when I asked what he had, he told me it was a 600w TE with a 4x10 + 1x15 cabs. I'll ask him if I can try the 1x15, since its tuned to 38hz, it could very well fix this issue.

Yeah, tuned to 38hz but like I said, doesn't really get going until 60hz. The Trace manual says to cut lows not boost them. The 4x10 probably makes more of the sub bass stuff than the 1518. Shame it beams.

I see on another thread someone chopped up a Trace 4x12 into twin 2x12. Not a bad plan for that 4x10, specailly if you're carrying the room with one.

8x10 is actually an easier lump to move. Instead of deadlifting it you tip it and slide it.

I agree with you about the deadlift point, but I find 4x10" easier to lift high enough to get in my SUV's trunk (plus, it can fit stand up). So yeah I get your point, but in my case, hauling two different cab is better than a huge one

Just a quick question, probably my last in this thread:

The amp is rated 4ohm minimal load, the cab is 4ohm aswell. Now I see that newer cabs are 8ohms. From what I gathered, the "link" behind the cab can be used to connect two cab together (in this particular case, useful since my Poweramp only has one 1/4" (or XLR) output (unless I can use both to connect to cab, wich I doubt)).

So my question, if I use the link, does it connect the cabs in parallel or in series? If its in serie, its all good (two 4ohm cabs = 8ohm = safe), in parallel its a big no-no (two 4ohm = 2ohm = danger).

I'm I getting this right (and clear enough to be answered)?

Yeah, if that's a 4 ohm cab, that's it...but the amp is running at full power. You could get 2 separate 8 ohm cabs and (again) the amp runs wide open, or a single 8 ohm and have a slight reduction on power. DO NOT use either two 4 ohm cabs, or a 4 ohm and 8 ohm together...that'll blow the amp.

Totally aware of that, don't worry. For now, I'll leave it as it is, but I'll check what are the speakers. I can always rewire them so it become an 8ohms cab (could even add a switch to choose between 4 and 8 ohms).
