Need opinions and guidance building a space elevator.

An update...
Don't worry everyone, the project successfully ended! Very.
I hope this thread played some part in getting people to at least
check an idea before talking trash. To all those who are engineers,
etc, who might have been offended by some aspects of this thread,
my apologies. As stated before, I'm one of over 3000 supporters.
Just one.

Hi.

To all those who are engineers,
etc, who might have been offended by some aspects of this thread,
my apologies.

If ignorance would offend engineers, we'd probably be long gone by our own hand by now.
Ignorance is the very thing that fuels our creativity ;).

About the only thing that slightly offended me as an engineer and an adult sci-fi nerd/freak was Your continuous reminding us about being "informed" when nothing in your replies or in the texts you linked to revealed any indication about the fundamental flaw(s) in their/your logic.

If it was a space-fountain they were after, that approach of theirs would make slightly more sense, but from an engineering viewpoint it's pretty sure that they will fail with the space elevator. Silently.

Once again, PT Barnum got it right :).

Regards
Sam

Well the be informed tag seemed pretty applicable to me. Because, though you indicated who you all are, your tag line doesn't read, "super qualified, highly intelligent engineer imminently capable of instantly discerning the inherent flaws and problems in this very complicated, never even attempted thing of which it would be quite natural to assume most on a site of this type would have never even heard". For me, a seeking layman, to think any of you would be qualified to dismiss this as you did was hard to grasp. And still is. The great thing is though, when the LUNAR elevator get's built or even attempted and fails gloriously, or not, one more step will have been taken towards one more thing no one thought very likely. And statistically speaking, this thread played some part in the project's success, so thanks to you all.

So, if this space elevator happens, I call dibs on being the first one to press the "Top Floor" button!
Oh and no farting... that would be bad. All locked up in an airtight elevator... with bad music... like 90 miles above Albany... eek.

I heard a story this morning on talk radio... I guess Mila Kunis got stuck in an elevator with 10 or so other people for 45 minutes. Imagine getting stuck in a space elevator?

Oh, and for those of you you donated to my Teleportain Device fund, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. The other day I dropped 3 hits of acid and came so close to slipping through the space/time curtain. We're almost there! I can say, with all certainty, that my device will be up and running within 10 years! All I need is more [DEL]acid[/DEL] funding... keep sending those dollars! :hyper:

HAHA matticus what would talkbass do without you?

It would become a bunch of bickering bass fanatics trying to figure out the best flats for metal and whatnot.

I just donated my last $100000 to your kickstarter to build prototypes! YOU CONVINCED ME.

Im sure it'd get along just fine. It did for a good 8 or 10 years before I stumbled in.
It might, however, lack a certain dash of eccentric absurdity.

I just donated my last $100000 to your kickstarter to build prototypes! YOU CONVINCED ME.

Thank you for being IMFORMED.

Hahhahah. Thanks everyone. As previously stated, it's been an eye opener!

wanna [DEL]drop some acid[/DEL] partake in some research with me?

I would pay to be stuck in an elevator with Mila Kunis... Be the best 45 minutes I've ever spent!
