Need opinions and guidance building a space elevator.

Hi.

So, it's We now :).

What type of an bad acid-trip makes You think that area will still just be up for grabs if (when) Your company eventually gets there?

The first to establish a precence on the any planets or moons surface (or orbit) except fotr the earth, pretty much controls everything there. And that spot "You chose" being the "best" for a lot of things, will be among the first to be claimed.

If I was a gambling kind of a feller, I'd bet good money that Your company won't be the first one there. You're pretty short on funds and resources for that it seems.

Think?

No.

Strongly suspect... or even KNOW?

YES!

But so what?
Aside for breaking some TB CUP rules, no harm done.
To anyone.
Just a gift thread that just keeps on giving.

Good for You.

Then again, there's more than one way to skin a cat ;).

Regards
Sam

Man I knew sayin we would stir someone up. Jeez, I didn't think anyone was this up in arms about anything. We, which means, despite your best attempt to connect dots which don't,
I think of us Space elevator idealists as in the same fight so to speak. Not that I'm the brains, or really even anything at all to any of the real motivators. I'am, despite the (telltale) we, one of 3200 or so other people who prior, to happening upon the kickstarter campaign, had no idea lunar elevators were anywhere near a reality.

And still I only stand to gain nothing. If the thing went up tomorrow, I would be happy to see it, hope the world was better for it,
and would be glad I had the tiniest hand in it's materialization.

So there are 3,199 other suckers that believe this is actually going to happen, to the extent that they will actually part with their cash? Wowzers.

This thread will rival 'ragequit' for thread of the year IMO.

I'VE DONE IT!!!!!!!!

I've built a freaking space elevator!

Just finished it actually, it's sooooooo Awesome.

I know, I know, pics or no space elevator.

I'll get some up soon.

First though, I've got real problems to worry about, not just pics. Sorry.

Here's the situation, I have EVERYTHING complete, all the materials, all assembled, and ready to go. Just ONE tiny issue.
It's stuck solid on the first floor and I'm a little short on cash, I know I can't do this alone, please send donations to get THE space elevator project off the ground. PM for details.

Don't feel like your being suckered in here guys, I've already raised the funds for 99.9% of the project and just need your help for the last little bit.
If each person could just send $825.00 US Dollars, I will have your name spray painted on the elevator in your choice of color. Don't let this opportunity pass you by, you have s chance to be part of history here fellas, and I'm not being stingy with the recognition.

You get the same amount of credit as the rest of the team, because that's what we are, a team and what does team stand for?

I'll tell you.
Together-Elevators-Are-Made.:::::In space.

Thanks for being a part of this, and also being INFORMED! You guys are the poop!

There would be huge financial benefits from building a space elevator on Earth.
So huge in fact that funding won't be an issue when technology allows it.

You are so correct. And because funding isn't here and tech still needs developed, we should just wait patiently for it all to fall in our laps. Following this mindset we'd still be walking and talking on can phones!
And this whole thread is mostly concerned with building a Lunar elevator as the stepping stone. Though the thread title does not mention this, if anyone took the time to read thread content, the fact would be perfectly clear.

Please don't make assumptions.
A lunar elevator makes zero sense, mostly because going to the moon makes zero sense.
There is a reason why no human has been there for 30 years.

Well, I'll tell you the assumption I'm making, which amazingly enough over the course of this thread has remained mostly consistent as held by our various TB engineer types, i.e., there is actually, great perceived value in going to the moon. Thus, when you espouse a completely different understanding, it is my conclusion you must be uninformed. If not, please feel free to elucidate your diametrically opposed view.

Your posts read like you are using a thesaurus. That doesn't help in your attempts to convince us Luddites that you are worth listening to.

In bullet points, each of ten words or less, could you list three advantages/uses/applications of an elevator orbiting the moon, anchored to the moons surface.

Hey thanks for complimenting my ready command of the English language. No, I'm not using a thesaurus, although I do sometimes have to check spelling. I like using big words, might explain why I'm a poet.

So you're a Luddite? An actual practicing one or do you play one in your kitchen? Don't see too many acknowledged Luddites in these parts..

As far as the advantages, etc, you can google those, you either know the, "best", of them right now, despite asking me for them, and don't believe they have sufficient merit, or you perhaps mistakenly believe I, using some amazing powers heretofore never thought of, have the ability to list some not previously covered by folks much more well read than I. While I do have amazing powers, as all humans do, sadly, this particular area is not where they are best applied.

Answer the question. Ten words or less per bullet point.

+1 I'd like to see that list too.

Really. Not. Going to. Waste. The time. Not. You want to make up some bullet pointed advantage list bring it, then let us all discuss relative merits, by all means do so. Might as well ask me to make a list of reasons why the sky is blue. Look in a book, this goes especially for you Mr. I'm an uber intelligent, discerning, more knowledgable than most/bassist extraordinaire tituscrow!

You are the one making the affirmative claim. I'm open to considering your position, but it's your job to support your claims, not someone else's job to rebut an argument you have not made.

Again....answer the question. Ten words or less per bullet point.

o dear...Just had another thought about the feasibility of the LUNAR space elevator. It takes the Moon 28 days to make 1 complete revolution, so the centrifugal force created by the moon's rotation would be insufficient to maintain the space anchor end of the elevator in lunar orbit. It would eventually collapse to the lunar surface.

The only way to get around this issue is the ribbon would need to be rigid.

Back to the drawing board....

Saying I'm making a claim in this case, is specious assertion.

I'm assuming in this case, that the preponderance of evidence indicates the truth, i.e., a cursory inspection of, the, "space race" as it stands can be reasonably assumed to support a belief that if getting to the moon, and staying there could be done right now today, cheaply, efficiently, and safely it would be a regular occurrence for the civilized world. So I don't need to show proof of my, "claim", I'm relying on reasonable recognition. If the, "audience", in this case the readers of this thread, don't understand the need to get back to the moon, establish some type of base there, etc, then really this, "conversation", is sorta doomed from the start. I don't believe this is the case however, so as previously stated, take ten seconds type into a google engine, or God forbid, Bing.

Nonsense. Here is one of your affirmative claims:

there is actually, great perceived value in going to the moon.

You also are clearly making the affirmative claim that there would be value to a lunar elevator.

If you're retracting these claims, then just say so. But if you're continuing to assert them, then provide evidence to support them. You could have done that in the time it took you to type a bunch of excuses as to why you won't.
