Need to Learn Death Metal/Deathcore

If its deathcore, prepare for a lot of chugging, scene kids "moshing", and a loss of respect from your pears :hiding:
Tune to Drop C, get an Ibanez, and follow the guitarist. Tone isn't imporntant, you won't be heard anyways. Just strike your E string with a pick and look busy!

The first part is somewhat true (especially family)...the second part i don't really agree with. lol

in metal your pretty much just keep rhythm and adding to the bottom end(obviously since your playing bass) and tuning can go from drop d to a b or c, use a pick unless you can play triplets with your fingers. and yeah pretty much keep up with the rhythm guitarist or drummer. very few times will you have to add more things and be a bit more creative. if you were to play say a mudvayne song, your making up for the non existant guitarist. and also look a little angry too. :-)

I'm a huge Death Metal fan. Many death metal band has bassist as Pick user, but famous Death Metal are usually Finger Users. Cannibal Corpse, Necrophagist, Blood Red Throne...

They usually have Trems set up high. Exception with Cannibal Corpse (Alex Webster) who uses relatively lower Trems and higher bass.

Im surprised at how many is recomendeing to turn up the bass knob. This wont get you heard in down-tuned death metal at all. Boost mids, cut bass and tremble is the way to go. Alot of people use distortion as well - not buzzing guitar like distortion but a little bit as it helps you cut through.

A former Meshuggah bass player once recomended to me that in the case of death metal your tone can sound like a fart when played alone but it will sound awesome once you actually play with your band.

This is very true, at last for me. I spent years of trying to get an awesome bass tone. And it did sound great at home and every time I got into the rehearsal room it was drowned out. Then I tried to have a thinner tone (less bass - more mids - distortion) and it didnt sound as good playing by myself but in the band setting its totally superior to anything Ive had since.


On fingers or pick for death metal - its you choice. Technical death metal bass players do tend to take pride in playing fingerstyle though. I think alot of them also has some jazz background where fingerplaying is of course dominant.

This thread is just ****ing wierd. Punch of geeky metal nerds debating about which band is technical norwegian jazz influenced death grindcore, and which is stoner metal deathcore blues with a hint of classical fusion jazz and Justin Bieber doing the background vocals.

I could on for a day, pick the best ones

Melodic goth troll emo grindcore (remember kids, scoop your mids on this one)

Heavily influenced by classical music, play only 32nd notes, tempo over 200bpm, Yngwie malmsteen is our god -metal (they don't need bass players cos' their just awesome)

Technical norwegian folk goth stoner grindcore

First off, you should prepare for a lot of people to look down on you because they play a different style. It's nothing new in music. Just be the bigger person and keep appreciating lots of styles, and remember that good music isn't any less musical because the guitars aren't tuned to E. Also, remember to spell check everything you post on an internet forum, because these things are rife with douche bags. Did I spell rife right guys? I'm sure you'll let me know if I didn't.

Check out some Opeth, especially "Blackwater Park". I'm not sure it's what you would classify as "death/metal/core/grindy/whathaveyou" but he's doing some really cool stuff that is both heavy and musical. Then check out "Crowbar", and you've basically heard the two extremes of heavy bass playing (80's metal is not heavy, sorry).
