Need to vent.....

You have to work hard to tolerate some people that are difficult to get along with. Nothing is worse than people with egos that treat others in a negative way.

You committed, try to make it work for one more gig. Take the high road and demonstrate that you have class. If you can, ask the rhythm guitarist to join you, tell him that you would enjoy playing with him in the band one more time. Then you can both leave and go on to better things.

I'd never not play out my commitments with a band. Well... if they did nothing to truly warrant my quitting on the spot.

I understand you're wanting to hang around for practice purposes, but there are plenty of better opportunities available for that. Find a better opportunity, or create one. You already know youre wasting you time with these guys.

Sorry guys I just need to vent.....I play in two bands one band is great awesome musicians I love the music we play except for the minor disagreements we generally get along great and the guys are professional and we enjoy playing with each other. All experienced musicians. We have a lot of fun playing and the bar patrons always seem to love that band which fuels our passion to play even more.

The other band I play in are comprised of guys that are mostly basement hackers that never really played out much. There are three core members that are terrible musicians and think they know everything and control everything. Music selection gigs etc.

Fights are the norm while I sit there and stare into space. well I have had enough and want to quit. I actually like a few of the guys personally and when I talked about quitting, they begged me to stay. I was actually OK with playing with these guys in the basement minus the constant arguments over things like harmonies that none of them seem to ever get right anyway. I generally thought of this band as a way to keep my chops up. They started to get gigs (only because the drummer has a lot of connections, if they had to get a gig on musicianship it wouldn't happen). The more gigs they attempt to book the less I want to stay. TBH I am embarrassed to play out with these guys.

Well I finally went off on them last night about an issue of them trying to take advantage of me. I know, and they know I am done. But......we have a gig coming up this Friday night. As much as I dread having to play with these guys again, I feel like I need to honor my commitment for the gig.

An experienced rhythm guitar player (who gets it) who was also in the band, just quit last week for the same reasons. He and I were discussing how much we hate this band, He says I should I just call up and quit now. His thought is life is too short to let them make me miserable any longer, gig or no gig.

are you venting? or are you trying to decide whether or not to do the gig?

you used them to try and achieve your goals = fail, more or less. see it through the gig (your commitment) and inform them of your next move if you haven't already.

inform yourself, then them.

good luck!

Do the gig, nobody's gonna die. And then make a "graceful exit". But consider this: playing with hacks can improve your value ... knowing and sensing when a train wreck is about to occur and averting it, taking the "lead" when it does, dealing with unprofessional (hell, uncivil) people ... if that's what you're into ... ;)

I think it's a little late to avoid the last show but there is nothing that says that you have to make them happy. Go, do whatever the shag you want, then leave the second your commitment is honored. Don't do extra songs. Don't let them drag it out. Just do the minimum. Take care of yourself. The hell with them. If they act up, leave early. Be unpredictable, uncontrolable, and fill them full of regrets. It's not that I think you should imitate them. It's that it sounds to me that these guys are twisted so nothing is ever good enough, even being a perfect gentleman. I would consider warning the owner of the establishment. That's my opinion.
