Dude, I hear you. I am going to the rehearsal tonight. (Which should be fun) and will be doing the gig on Friday night. Counting the minutes until the last song of the last set is over.Just my opinion, but you are only obligated to do what you agreed to do, which is play the gig. If you've already let them know you are quitting I don't think you are obligated to learn new songs, or attend rehearsals.
I was in a band where we were getting ready to fire the drummer for epic incompetence (my fault for not insisting as soon as I saw he couldn't/wouldn't be fixed). The drummer and guitarist wanted to have a rehearsal before the last gig. I refused, said rehearsing didn't help because the drummer didn't know the songs and he wasn't going to learn them on my dime. He was no better or worse than he usual and we fired him the next day.
If you claim to be a professional, you honor your word. It's really just that simple. If they change the circumstances of what you agreed to, that is a different story.
Thats part of the problem with these guys. They have little experience yet they think they know everything and wont take even the subtlest suggestions from anyone with more experience.
Cracked me up ...Although, you CAN and SHOULD get your bad drummer fixed.
Help control the unwanted animal population.
Exactly where I stopped reading the OPs thread too. How on earth can anyone keep chops up - even not developing but staying at the same level - with lesser musicians than you yourself are? I've yet to see this happen, it hasn't happened, and I will be not around long enought to see this happen, and as such, I wouldn't hold my breath. Just stating that line blew it all into a bad weird catch-22 of some sorts. Move on. Is the gig that important? "Ruin you reputation?" for whom? When anyone hears that band they instead would go "uh oh...now I get it... little wonder".You don't improve by playing with people WORSE than you.
Sorry guys I just need to vent.....I play in two bands one band is great awesome musicians I love the music we play except for the minor disagreements we generally get along great and the guys are professional and we enjoy playing with each other. All experienced musicians. We have a lot of fun playing and the bar patrons always seem to love that band which fuels our passion to play even more.
The other band I play in are comprised of guys that are mostly basement hackers that never really played out much. There are three core members that are terrible musicians and think they know everything and control everything. Music selection gigs etc.
Fights are the norm while I sit there and stare into space. well I have had enough and want to quit. I actually like a few of the guys personally and when I talked about quitting, they begged me to stay. I was actually OK with playing with these guys in the basement minus the constant arguments over things like harmonies that none of them seem to ever get right anyway. I generally thought of this band as a way to keep my chops up. They started to get gigs (only because the drummer has a lot of connections, if they had to get a gig on musicianship it wouldn't happen). The more gigs they attempt to book the less I want to stay. TBH I am embarrassed to play out with these guys.
Well I finally went off on them last night about an issue of them trying to take advantage of me. I know, and they know I am done. But......we have a gig coming up this Friday night. As much as I dread having to play with these guys again, I feel like I need to honor my commitment for the gig.
An experienced rhythm guitar player (who gets it) who was also in the band, just quit last week for the same reasons. He and I were discussing how much we hate this band, He says I should I just call up and quit now. His thought is life is too short to let them make me miserable any longer, gig or no gig.
It's a ludicrous statement and often the first response on TB, which is why I smile and chuckle a bit everytime I see it.Wasn't there a recent thread that concluded that this joke is not funny?
...The other band I play in are comprised of... terrible musicians...
I spent time staring into space because I didn't need to get caught up in their drama. I used to calm things down during ridiculous fights between the GP's which happened often, but it never stopped happening. I tried on many occasions to lend advice where it was needed and it was ignored. They decided they know whats best. So I decided I wasn't going to be part of their drama anymore. As I stated I don't need the aggravation.Sounds like you fit right in. But youre even more smug and controlling because youre passive. If youd stop "staring into space" and contribute (without all the judgement) it would also fulfill your awesome ego. (sans their begging, sorry)
Im glad Paul or John didnt walk out to find more "talented" people.
(this is friendly btw not a personal attack, imagine my arm around your shoulders and me poking you in the ribs as I say this)
PS any pro here will tell you to NEVER burn bridges

No ego issue here. I wasn't saying they were begging me to stay because I consider myself a great player. They begged me to stay because I caused the least amount of drama. They apparently are having trouble keeping bass players and rhythm guitar players form staying because of the drama. I decided to stick it out for the past few months, but now I am done for good. Sometimes you gotta burn a few bridges. I have no plans to play with any of these guys again. And they are definitely not plugged into any great musician network that will cost me a job with another band.
