Nepotism in Music

Nepotism exists everywhere. Ask today's movie stars and starlets about their erstwhile star parents. Ask today's politicians about their erstwhile political parents. I live in the "wine country" of Northern California. In Napa Valley, many of the people running storied wineries got their jobs from their parents, and parents' parents who started the ventures long before. The local nickname for the current crop is:

"Lucky Spermers."

The thing that is scary is when you start to realise how many celebrities (be they actors, musicians, tv presenters etc) come from rich families. The 1% not only get to rule and employ us, they also supply our entertainment.....

I mean... i'm not saying people from affluent backgrounds ought to just count their money alone in their room and never be in the public eye or try to work in entertainment for a living, but it kinda makes you sick a little sometimes because they get easy opportunities the rest of us doesn't. If nothing else because they are allowed to work on their craft while not having to worry about being employed in any way (something which the average musician knows would be a huge benefit). But also because of networking. Daddy knows a guy that knows a guy that's gonna get you a record contract honey, don't you worry. Or in the best cases, maybe Daddy IS the guy.

Ziggy Marley came first to my mind. Someone else already mentioned Wolfgang Van Halen.

The singer from The Strokes. They were big for about a year or two. Didn't his dad used to own Casablanca Records?

Not by blood but by marriage, Yoko Ono and Linda McCartney.

I don't mind. I always find it interesting to see if folks can make it like their celebrity family member, even with all their connections. Most of the time the music is a mere shadow, however once in a while the talent (or at least listenable music) is greater or equal.

Steve HArris' daughter is/was in a band. I just remember reading an article some years back where it said like the label didnt know who she was when they got signed blahblah. uhuh. Right. I hate when they are being disingenous about it. Like Lily Allen who according to the story just got big putting her music on myspace. Right AND she's the daughter of british comedian/actor Keith Allen and some movie producer. You don't think that helped a little? No? Please... She quit school at 15 to "focus on songwriting". Who do you think footed the bill meanwhile anyway?. Just don't try to say it's not what it seems like. Id respect them a lot more if they said "yeah my dad/mom got me a record deal and paid my rent and food while i was waiting to inevitably make it big". Or at least, don't say anything. Just DON'T say it had NOTHING to do with it.

I think he meant Donnie Van Zant....... but I think you probably knew that and were trying to make a point...... but I'm not sure so I figured I would answer the question.

Lot's of Williams people latched on to dad's career. Hank Jr., Hank III and there are a couple of daughters of Hank Senior trying to bang out a music career too I think.

The band Bloodline was most of a band of famous people's kids.

Meatloaf's daughter had a band but I can't remember the name (or her name).

That crappy dance group LMFAO, Redfoo is actually the son of Berry Gordy. Andi think the other guy is a Gordy too! Another one which always erked me is Norah Jones. To me her talent is questionable... To throw another actor out there, Rashida Jones. Bad actress, but daughter of Quincy Jones...
