I owned and used the Baby Blue. Nice cab, didn't care for the amplifier section though, otherwise I'd still be using it. I think the 285 cab is probably more Hi Fi than the Baby Blue cab, and it's certainly built more heavy duty than the BB. That's the impression I've got anyway.

I believe you are right about the the recordings of John's bass. Nice sound clips. Not nice enough for me to risk paying shipping **two** ways in the event that I didn't like the JC285.

Truer words could not be spoken Mr. PC! I had a Baby Blue 2x8 and just couldn't get next to the sound of the amp, so I pulled the head out and set my Walter Woods MI-100-8 in the slot, the sound was immediately better. Then SWR built a 2X8 extension cabinet for the Baby Blue, so I sold the amp, and kept the extension cabinet. I always blamed it on the BB midrange control and that dreaded "aural enhancer" of doom.

I would be inclined to agree since speakers, especially 8" drivers have gotten a lot better and there are 8" neo's as well, but I've never played through one and I'm not likely to, unless someone gets one to St. Louis. It also has what looks like a front port, but I can't be sure, since I thought it was rear ported.

John would sound great through a couple of Tom McCann shoe boxes powered by a 57 Chevrolet AM Radio.

Yes, why do they make the Aguilar stuff so damn heavy!
I have a Aguilar DB410 cab for my EB. The sound is great but it is too heavy (90 lbs or so). So every gig I decide to bring just my Eden 210 cab and leave the Aguilar at home.

Thinking about selling it for this reason.

Today almost every manufacturer is trying to make their cabs more light. Because most players want that. Why doesn't Aguilar follow this trend?

It might be that the best sounding 8" drivers are heavy. Dunno. I ordered an LDS 2x8 a while back, but backed out of the transaction when I was told the cab would weigh about 50 lbs. That was surprising.

As an experiment I'm thinking of building a 2x8 sealed cab, ideally 4 ohm. Just a box for monitoring, nothing fancy. As a matter of fact, it will probably be butt ugly to look at. I did purchase the Ampeg sealed 210 recently, and it works very well for what it is and what it cost. I'm remembering whyI liked sealed cabinets so much after using this cab.

I think the JC285 might be **jacked** up cost wise because of the artist endorsement. I cant see any other reason.......the cost somehow is keeping the product out of stores and out of the hands of consumers.

Funny, It's been posted before that people feel the price of this Aguilar cab is jacked up. I don't think it's out of line with prices of other high end cabs at all. If you compare it to an offshore manufactured Ampeg cab- maybe it seems high.
But if you compare it to the nearly $900 Euphonic Audio 2x10 or even the Genz-Benz 2x10 at $850, the price for the JC285 doesn't seem out of line at all at $675. :)

I've been quoted $699, and buyer pays ALL shipping in the event of a return. I'd guess the cab weighs 60 lbs with packing. It'ds going to be pricey to return, and it usually takes awhile to get a refund. Too much risk, IMO.

Aguilar could show some confidence in this product by shipping product to dealers, IMO. There are at least five in my area, not including the Guitar Center chain stores. Aguilar takes out full color ads in BP. They must have some budget to work with. Hey now, I'm just a consumer with opinions, afterall!:D

I'd suspect that Aguilar is using offshore components in their product. I own two GS112 cabs, bought em when they hit the street in the early 2000's. The OEM covers for those were made in China as well. Great cabs, BTW.

I actually have one of Don's LDS 2x8 Three Ways. It's a phenominal cabinet and sounds great with either DB or EB. Mine came in at around 46 lbs. even with B&C Neo Drivers, since I opted for the road spray finish. Don dosen't use, or didn't use, the lightweight poplar plywood that Bergantino, Epifani and others do to get the weight down.

You are probably correct, but all the 2X8 cabinets I've owned and believe me, I've owned a great many of them ( SWR Baby Blue, Flite Sound 2X8 with magnetic suspension aluminum drivers, EA VL 208) all cost more than some of the 2X10's. Did you take a look at the new Accugrove 2X8's there's possible a lot more going on there, as long as they don't feature the "Accuswitch"? They are not cheap though.

Well, not generic in those ways. Ordinary would probably be a better term.

I mean you can go to Guitar Center or shop Musician's friend and find the Aguilar products very easily. At any given time there are several Aguilar cabinets available (lots of GS112's) on ebay as well.

Aguilar is not a small brand boutique item by any means. IMO. Their marketing is corporate.

I got the $675 price from Amazon.com in monster green/chocolate thunder- the other finishes are $699.

I didn't mean to bring offshore manufacture into the conversation in a bad sense. I was just saying that the cost of manufacture/assembly of product in the USA is often greater than manufacture/assembly elsewhere.
I agree that Aguilar might sell a lot more of these cabs if they put a few out in the shops for folks to try- and I completely understand the hesitation to order something sight unseen/unheard.
Maybe they think it's a very specific niche market for this cab- weirdo Jack Casady fans/hollowbody bassists/DB'ers- yep that's me...:p
I'm not trying to sell this cab to anybody, it's definitely not the cab for everyone-
It doesn't have deep bass extension, the max wattage is only 300 watts and the sensitivity is kind of low, it's heavy for it's size, and it is just as expensive as any other high quality small cab. I bought it anyway, and thankfully I like it a lot.:hyper:
