Double Bass New 2x8 Aguilar cab

I ran across another weird deal. I already have IIRC 4 VL110's and 2 VL210's (long story) and one day recently while looking at Bassgear.com I saw a VL208 AND a VL110 for $600.:eek:. I doublechecked with the seller that that was the price for both... and I bought them. The sound the VL208 puts out is pretty ridiculous for it's size and coupled with a VL110 it's even moreso. I tried it on top of one of the VL210's and I know I have nowhere I could possibly need that much volume.

I couldn't believe it. I also could believe no one had jumped on it up to that point. I now have a practice rig set up in my office of an iAmp350, VL208 and VL110. Talk about overkill.

I'm trying not to catch up with you... and failing:smug:. So many crazy deals keep popping up and my garage isn't full yet.

Picked up another Bag End S15-D about a month ago. Sitting in a pawnshop, marked "bulk speaker" and tagged at $79. They offered it to me for $60.

I'm currently using (as my main doubling rig) an Eden WT-330 and a custom made cab by Lou Furlinetto (yeah, it's George's brother) which has 2 8" drivers that can handle 500 watts at 4 ohms. It only weighs about 35 lbs, and sounds GREAT!!! I am totally sold on the 8" driver concept. I have no idea what speakers are in this cab, but they really are ridiculous sounding.

Best part...I traded my SWR Baby Baby Blue for the cab and an EA iAMP 350!

Don't leave us in suspense show us this baby. I have owned all the commercially built 2x8's. We would all like to see this one. Even EA hasn't cracked the 40 lb barrier, at least not yet.

I'd like to hear more about this cab too. The weight of the Aguilar cab almost scared me off, but it looks so small ......

Just picked up the aggie cab at the shop. She's a beaut. Love the neo-tweed. Boss tweed they call it. Hooked it up briefly to a LMII with a '62 J bass. Yep, 62! It sounded really good. Very even sounding. But not too polite. Good badonkadonk factor so far. Sorry if I lose ya with all the technical talk. The weight of the cab is a little hefty, but the handle is offset a little to the side and it balances well for carrying. Has feet to allow for using the cab vertically or horizonally. I won't be able to mess with it again till Saturday. I'll try it with my Sunn Sceptre and GK head. Upright bass too.....Dave

OK, I've had the weekend to thump around on the Aggie 2x8 cab. I really like it so far. I've never had a cab with the midrange level thingamadoddlebob. Very cool feature, you can change the sound of the cab pretty drastically. Tried it with upright with a Bassmax pickup and a SM 58 blended through a Raven Labs PMBII into the GK. Sounded really good. I've been saying it's vintage leaning but modern at the same time....I don't know, some of the uber gear gods need to coach me on this gear description business....;)

Vintage leaning but modern at the same time, that's exactly my style! How loud is this cab as compared to GK MB150 combo?

You know, I've never really played with the GK MB150. I've been driving the cab with an old GK RCB 200. I believe it's 100 watts at the 4 ohms. I've also powered it with a Sunn Sceptre head that I've had modified. I've been playing with a fairly quiet drummer and 2 moderate volume guitarists and a mic'd piano. It kept up well. The cabinet seems to cut with a good amount of clarity, but has a lot of "color" at the same time. I guess the core tone of this cab seems "dark" and "clear"? At least with my set up. I do lean toward dark bass tones, none of that stringy fingerboard sound for me. I feel like I'm trying to sing about architecture.:confused:

I am going to give this thread a little bump. Since it seems unlikely at this point that the EA Neo 2x8 is going to happen and this cabinet is out there and can be had for $700 in stock online.

At 50lbs it's about the same weight as the famed VL-208. Anybody using this cab?

You are the man Brad. It took me about a year to find just the VL 208. It's in beautiful shape and I already had a VL 110, but both for 6 bills is the deal of the century. Uncle Toad is right, it's time for you to hit tables at Vegas.

I'm at work right now, but if you have specific questions about the Aguilar cab. I will try to answer. I've never played through the VL208, so not much help in comparing the two. I do like the Aggie 2x8 cab, but I have to admit, I've been using an Acme B-1 lately because it's smaller and lighter for low volume gigs.

My good friend Ken Jung had both the Acme B1 and B2 they have a similar sound to the EA VL 108 and 208. I like the midrange detail of the VL's a little better, but the Acme's are pretty close. Since they aren't Transmission Line Boxes they sound a little different, but they are nice for DB.

That's interesting. I really like both of these cabs (Acme B-1 and the Aggie 2x8) but they are very different. I would imagine the difference between the EA VL208 and the Aggie 2x8 being pretty drastic. The Aggie has more of a mid forward thing going on. Cuts, but sits nicely in the mix. Not much extended low end-I would say not good for 5 stringers. Kind of vintage sounding to me verging into a kind of 70's hi fi thing as you dial up the mid control. The Acme has the low bass extension. Neither is a "bright" cab. Very quick impressions- IMHO

There's someone on TB that replaced an EA VL208 with two wizzy tens-was it Chris Fitzgerald?
