Double Bass New 2x8 Aguilar cab

Yes. I liked the sound of the VL208 a little better, but as I got more confident with my acoustic sound and found a way to blend a mic into the mix, the lure of 35lbs lighter and much smaller was enough to make me switch. I have no regrets other than general nostalgia. On the gig, I'm happy with the smaller rig. And the truth is, for DB I only need one Wizzy. The second one is basically a backup and stays in my music room for sessions and those rare occasions when I practice slab.

Thanks Chris. For myself, if I'm shooting for the "my bass only louder sound" fantasy-land 
in a lower volume situation- it will be the Acme B-1 and Clarus that I take to the gig.
For a noisier or more dense music w/ electric instruments, louder- the Aguilar 2x8 and Clarus goes because of the way this cab sits in the mix.

I know this is an old thread, but Chris are you still using two Wizzy tens,and if so how are you liking them after having them for awhile? I'm looking at getting two Wizzy 10's, or Acme B1's or one DB285 cab..
Since this thread is back...... very recently I decided to not purchase the JC285. I was saving my pennies for a special order. Nobody stocks them. Nobody seems to know what they sound like when I talk to the Aguilar dealers. If one shows up on my side of town, I'll try it, but 700 bucks plus shipping for a possible return (50+pounds) is just to much. Aguilar dropped the ball on this cab I think. Too bad.
Good to know.. I'm leaning towards two Wizzy 10's most likely as they are super light weight, and I havent heard any cab that EA has made that sounds bad.
My main go-to amp at this point is the Phil Jones Super Flightcase 300. I sold one of the Wizzy 10's and keep the AI Focus and one Wizzy 10 as a backup amp for when I want a more articulate, brighter modern sound. I still think it's a great cab. I haven't heard the newer slightly darker ones yet.
Chris how are you liking the PJS combo? I'll be moving to Philly in a few months and need something I can walk around with as I wont be having a car out there
Loving it! It's not that heavy compared to some amps, but I'd get a collapsible dolly for dragging it around for sure unless you want to end up with one arm longer than the other.

I have both an ACME B1 and the DB285.
I primarily use an Acoustic Image Clarus to amplify these days. I play upright- bluegrass, old country, americana, blues music.
While I am not familiar with the Wizzy 10's, the feedback on them is pretty good. From what I read- they are tough to beat for portability.
The DB285 is no lightweight cab, but it is fairly compact and manageable.
The ACME B-1 is no lightweight either-31 lbs from the Acme website- but it is very compact and easy to manage.
Moving the cabs for me usually consists of house to van/van to club and back again.
For me, choosing between the Acme B1's or one DB285 would depend on what kind of context-the music/volume/instrumentation in which I would be using the cab.
Usually the B1 will go out with me for quieter, all acoustic gigs. The gigs where I might not use an amp at all, but need to because of bad stage acoustics + a cheap house PA where it's best to avoid putting bass in monitors.
For louder gigs, I take the DB285. Gigs with drums, electric guitar, steel, etc. I find that it "cuts" or "sits in the mix" better at these higher volumes without having to eq it dramatically. The cab is voiced without much deep bass extension- which I think works well for stage use for DB.

The eq on the Clarus is very limited, and I'm not much of a knob twittler anyway. I like to plug in and play. But, I'm sure the B-1 would respond very well to eq if you like that sort of thing.... 
I find the combination of the attenuators on both the B-1 and the DB285- along with the high pass filter on the Clarus to be the only eq I need in most situations.
Also, what I consider a "loud" gig is still pretty quiet.

so someone does own a DB285JC! I'll be doing alot of research and testing out all my cab options asap
Rumor has it that Bergantino might be coming out with a DB friendly small cabinet in the late summer, you may want to keep your eye out for what develops...

Peter will do.. quick side question.. How do you get to most of your gigs? I'm moving out to Philly soon and wont be having a car to transport my gear.
I drive and use the discontinued EA VL208. If I had to walk, take a cab or subway I would use a wizzy 10 and doubler, maybe even consider an Acoustic Image combo.
You may consider starting your own thread in the DB amps forum rather then jumping around between different threads.

A big +1 to the lightweight combo/wizzy 10+ doubler or acoustic image combo idea if you're going to be carrying your cab any distance in Philly.
I've been pretty interest in this cabinet because of my penchant for 2X8 cabinets. I didn't find a clip where John played the upright through the cab. Since I own a EA VL 208 and a LDS 2x8 those cabinets are kind of the gold standard for me. From listening to those clips the Aguilar sounds similar to the old Baby Blue 2X8 Cabinet I had. My guess is that if I were to put the DB 285 and the Baby Blue side by side, they would sound a lot alike.

If you look where we gravitate to as players, it seems to point out that, for whatever it's worth, quite a lot of us like cabinets like the VL 208 with 2X8" Drivers, 5.25 Midrange and 3.50 Tweeter the PJB Super Flight Case with 6 5" Drivers or Wizzy 12" or 10". All these cabinets use smaller speakers in pairs or the Wizzer cone that was used in ye olde
6X9 auto speakers. Very different from our EB counterparts.

Yep very likely- I'm not very familiar with the Baby Blue cab. Played electric bass on the baby blue combo a couple times in the shop- way back when.... I know that Jack Casady used a baby blue cab for a while for smaller gigs with Hot Tuna.
My impression was that tracks 6,7, & 8 were all John playing his JB Vuillaume built in 1860 through the DB285. I may have read it wrong....
The VL208 is the gold standard in my book
too...Don't much care for it as an electric bass cabinet though.
