Well it would be a tight fit on the circuit board, and make the front panel more cluttered than I'd like. It would also make the final product more expensive, as a nice on-on-on sp3t toggle doesn't come cheap. I'd definitely consider it if people really wanted it on the outside, I just assumed that most bass players would leave it on lowpass all the time.

When I had a Maxon AF-9 I never used high-pass on bass and generally used lowpass but it was nice to have the option of bandpass which I did use a fair amount.

Band pass filter have their own vibe and though they can make you disappear from the mix (which is why I used a blender with my FX25 and why the new MXR filter has a clean blend built in) it can be a very cool, bubbly and aggressive sound.

And even without a blend, when there's space in the mix a bandpass filter on bass can sound great. Check out about 2:04 for the breakdown.

The BP mix position on the Q-trons is pretty cool for bass as well. 9 volt operation and smaller size are very attractive but I'm pretty attached to switching between LP and BP mix. I would not want to have to use a screwdriver for that or add a blender loop pedal.
How different/similar to the Q-tron will this sound?

I'd prefer internal, but would be OK with a 2 position external.
I don't find that the original "gain" knob actually impacts level as much as tone, so I don't see the need for one.

As I've already mentioned I'd probably only use the lowpass setting, so internal is fine for me. Having said that, I respect my fellow bassists' desire for flexibility and have no objections to the idea of an external two-way switch.

Well, it's a new envelope filter made by our one Spencer!, My intrest is mandatory and uncontrollable, lol. I might even go for the proto, but I'll have to think a bit. I'm not exactly hip to the mutron tone so does anyone have any "reference" clips?

and +1 on the external switch. Use one of those sliding 3-way switch and stick it on the side if you really need the space :)
