Double Bass New Acoustic Image 'DOUBLESHOT'

My DoubleShot arrived. I got a Speakon cable, and hooked it up to my Fodera Monarch and Quilter Bass Block. It sounds SO good. Superb for rehearsals, and I think it’ll happily handle small gigs, too. And just 11lb! Really happy with it.

(Gig… that word sounds familiar…. sigh )

Can anyone who has used both compare a double shot to my well used pair of ACME B1s?

I know the double shot will be about 30 lbs lighter, but how will it compare in terms of on the job volume? I had a Ten two for about three days. Day one it blew up the cab on the first gig. Day two it shipped back and got replaced. day three it $#@%'d up again and I sold it....I liked the voice, but it seemed woefully underpowered- a very delicate cab that occasionally could be turned up to modest volumes....a complete fail for my daily use. I've had over 20 different cabs and always seem to go back to the trusty old B1s, even though I replace the drivers every couple of years. Weight and size have nothing to do with my concerns; power and voice do.

I use a pair of B1s or a pair plus a B2 for stage monitors for me and the band and the rest goes into the front of house, mostly for rowdy brewery & pub gigs. Will the doubleshot handle that or will it be another one of life's disappointments? There is one available locally for a very fair price.

I’ve used my Doubleshot on our past regular rowdy pub gig. It benefitted from us being in a brick and glass corner it replaced the 12” cab I tried in that space. (Horrible acoustics in that space helped us figure out some of our gear and approach over the years.) This year we did a lot of 45-minute set outdoor festival gigs. On those, the Doubleshot was great where we had to be on and off the stage quickly and there was enough PA support that the Doubleshot was my monitor. That said, when I need the punch and we’re using our own modest PA, I bring my MAS 46 or a pair of Aguilar SL112s. Does the Doubleshot you’re looking at have the flat sides or the beveled edges? There are a couple generations of the Doubleshot now with a slightly different cab design and wiring for the 5” mid switch. I found the newer one with beveled edges to be a significant improvement over AI’s first iterations of the cabinet.

I find that the Doubleshot provides more volume, surprisingly, than the larger (and similarly equipped) Ten2 cab, but I fear you may be asking too much of it (and of its predecessor, considering you busted two of them in 3 days worth of use). I'd be surprised if it could do what you're asking of it, and that's coming from the top dealer of Acoustic Image gear. ;-)

This. The DoubleShot only weighs 15 pounds. I can't see it keeping up with two (well designed) conventional cabinets. That light weight comes at the expense of efficiency. Idk the specs on the Acme cabs, but I think you'll find that they're far more efficient than the DoubleShot, and therefore probably have a higher max SPL. The DS lists a max SPL of 118db.

Being the guy I am, I rarely get new gear these days. The last major thing I got was an Upshot shortly after they came out. I was looking for a small, light cab which is definitely what it is. It works well for many situations, but has definite limitations. In circumstances where it is too small, I have gone back to my Acme B1 that I got 20+years ago. I've also gone back to my really old WW M100-8. As long as the WW holds up, this will be my main amp for DB. For BG I have gone to a more powerful amp with the Acme cab. If a gig requires more than that with no FOH I probably won't want to do it anyway. I was interested in the Doubleshot at one point but the Acme is not so heavy or large that it makes me think there is a situation that the Upshot or Acme can't handle.

+1 on BobKay's sentiments.

IME my AI cabs have kept up well with my ACME cabs in power/tone/volume for both upright and electric—but I've not played them (both AI and ACME) hard enough to need a driver replaced.

I do think the DbShot is an improvement over the 2Ten cab, though all of the AI cabs 'present themselves' differently than a traditional front-facing ported cab. The AIs are more omni-directional, giving them a different feel on stage.

If you do a Google image search for the Doubleshot, you’ll find at least 3 different iterations of the grill design for the 10” drivers. I bought an early model (#0068) in 2019 with the first iteration of press-on/friction fit grills. In my experience (and other on this thread), some units of this version had issues with some low frequency flutter at higher volumes. Acoustic Image now makes them with flat grill panels attached with screws that eliminated this issue.

Another part that appears to have changed from V1 was the implementation of the mid-driver switch. On later models the switch functions as On/6db boost as opposed to On/Off. I first learned of this from Michael Drost’s post about this earlier in this thread here: New Acoustic Image 'DOUBLESHOT'

Smaller detail: They also moved away from the plastic adhesive logo badges to screwed-on plates.

A little over a year ago, I sent mine back to AI to have them update the grills and the mid switch, which they did for a very modest fee. In fact, they essentially dropped the drivers from my unit into one of the newer shells and affixed my original serial number plate. The updated unit feels like a much tighter, more refined build than the first version. And for self-monitoring, I never want that mid driver off. So I appreciate the added clarity or the option to boost it when needed.

If you’re looking for some feet to help your favorite amp head take advantage of the bumpers atop your Doubleshot, I found a seller offering small batches of self-adhesive 3M bumpers. Worked perfect for setting my older AI head on the cabinet without an extra bracket.
