Double Bass New Acoustic Image 'DOUBLESHOT'

hey man, it's your steak. Put what you like on it

(Sorry havent tried a GK head with any of the AI speakers but I have used them several micro-heads, I can say "if you like the tone of your head you'll probably like it thru the speaker".)

I thought you folks might be interested in having a look at the bag that Rick at Acoustic Image is now recommending to hold the DoubleShot and a Clarus 4S head. I just got mine: an Ahead Armor Cases Tom Bag 9 x 12) from Drumland up here. I already have the Acoustic Image bag that Gollihur Music used to stock. So here's the two of them.

The Ahead bag is made of tough cordulon fabric with great zippers, handle, etc. The padding is sheepskin material with no foam that I can feel. There's no pockets inside or out. The Acoustic Image bag by contrast is a light nylon-type fabric with modest foam padding. There's a little padded chamber at one end that the Clarus can slip into (versus just sitting on the speaker in the Ahead bag). I have a slab of padding left over from a GruvGear bag that I'll likely put between the Clarus and the DoubleShot in the Ahead bag. There's also a thin pocket on the bag lid that would hold a folder of sheet music perhaps. There's some backpack straps on the rear of the Acoustic Image bag but it sits so stupidly on your back that they're useless.

Edit: There's enough room in the corners of either bag to tuck the Speakon cable and the power cable for the amp. I like that since I'm idiot enough to forget one or both of them.

The Ahead bag is certainly a tougher unit and in my view likely to be more protective. The Acoustic Image bag is light portability if you don't really need protection. I baby my stuff so it's served OK, but Rick has I think made the right call in recommending these Ahead tom-tom bags.

Hello - Quick question. Just got an A/I Doubleshot with the Clarus 4+ amp/combo. The Ahead 9X12 tom case is great, but I can't seem to fit both the D/S speakers and amp in the Ahead case. Am I missing something? The area where the amp is situated in the photos (see previous) is too narrow for the Clarus, and I can't get the case zipped. Am I missing something? Thanks.

Hmmm...well, I don't know. I just checked my invoice to make sure what I have really is the 9x12 tom case and it is. I will grant you that it's a snug fit, but it's certainly doable for me. I lay the DS in with its feet toward the widest part of the case. I've then got some soft foam on top of the handle at the other end and the Clarus (SL Series 4plus) sits flat on that, in the narrowest part of the case, inside a freezer baggie: knobs up with the case open, centred over the handle. The cables, wound, go in the corners under the amp. I do remember that when I first tried it I was convinced it wasn't going to work, but I sort of wedged the amp in and, with each in and out of the case, the whole job becomes easier. I hope it will be that way for you as well.

Hey any buzz about an upcoming AI product(s)? I just noticed a price drop in the DbShots online $649 (didn't they use to be 729?)

Yeah, no price drop. They weren't ever >$700 but maybe you saw a listing that showed the "MSRP" or something...

Seeing today's thread activity reminded me how much I dig this cab. It packs so much sound in a small package. When I don't need to lug my two Aguilar SL112s for the loud rooms, this one does great--even outdoors--for our six-piece 'string band with drums' configuration.

Also, AI/Rick Jones' customer service is outstanding. I have a relatively early unit (#0068) that had some cabinet vibration noise on certain notes at certain volumes, due to the older press-on grille design. I also wanted the mid-range switch to function as -6db/Full On as opposed to Full Off/-6db, like they do on the newest iteration. I shipped my cab back to him and, for a very modest fee, they pretty much swapped out the drivers (and the serial number tag) into the updated cab design. It sounds great. I'm downsizing some other equipment, but the Doubleshot is a keeper.

YES! Rick is great Ive had a few of my AI pieces either serviced or upgraded. Service is always quick, easy, and friendly.

I just saw on the AI site the 'new' Coda+ cab (Upshot with a mid Spkr in a DbSht container)

man, seeing new gear make me I feel like im just waking up after a LONG pandemic sleep!

Pizza near me is up 20% too:bawl:. I'm really enjoying the DS. I've owned a few sealed cabs/combos and I'm realizing that I love the way the low end is presented with upright from a sealed cab and the way they sit in a mix. The mid driver is great at dialing in just the right amount of growl without getting clanky like some tweeters can. It's 15lbs and I don't think I could find anything that could put out as much sound at that weight.

agreed, (in both AI punch above its weight .. and inflation)

I know this is the DbSht thread but to shine a light on AI, the UpShot is also incredible on the gig with upright and electric. I have a DS arriving so excited to hear how it'll handle my gospel gigs ...and stop hauling a 2x10 cab thru a crowded congregation. LOL

I know there were some posts awhile back about cases/backpack/etc

I just loaded mine into my UpShot Backpack, adjusted the shoulder straps, and toured around my apt bldg. While the US allows me to pack in more accessories, the DS fits nicely and is comfortable to haul. (I loaded the case with the DS, all cables needed, and tried two different heads; Quilter Interbass or the Clarus SL2 Series4+.)

IMO though, the quality of the backpack could be sturdier. Im pretty sure this pack will fall apart alot sooner than most. (I'll be looking for a alternate solution for the long haul)

Wow! I found the Acoustic Image “backpack” incredibly awkward and badly balanced with the DoubleShot in it. It’s not so bad a case when used with the handle, but not nearly as good as the drum case that AI recommends these days. It’s *very* toughly made and well padded.

I’ve had no problem with backpack. Adjusting the straps helps to place the load across the back. (I like to wear the pack ‘higher’ to keep the load across my shoulders/lats/mid back and avoid the lumbar/lower back)

and yes AI suggests a drum case. (A easy solution with LOTS of options) but that doesn’t work for me on the subway.

I haven't used mine much for electric bass besides practicing, where it sounds great. Let us know how it works out.

used the DS (replacing my Bareface Two10) for gospel gig this morning.

so nice to transport. used my GL L2500 and AI Clarus SL-2 head (10:00 gain/12:00 vol). held its weight against; fender rumble gtr, Roland 1x12 keyboard amp, aLoud drummer behind plex, and 18 singers.

Happy.

PS>

really like the side/front firing cab opposed to a standard front-firing cab. This church has an awkward ’narrow’ staging so i was able to place the cab in front of me— instead of trying to stand in front of a front-firing cab. everyone to right and left clearly heard the bass.

also love the mid switch! very versatile
