Double Bass New Adjustable Angled Endpin (like Laborie, Rabbath, Eggpin, etc.)

As far as Eggpins, I would honestly love to bring them back to life. There are some really diehard Eggpin fans and I have the technical resources to do a copy of same or superior quality....I just can't track one down! The people who have them tend to be pretty protective because it's such a rare item. Does anyone know the origin of the Eggpin or who the inventor is? It would be amazing to be able to offer my device alongside the Eggpin.

One observation/suggestion from me: I've had experience with long portions of metal rod inside the bass causing weird sympathetic vibrations / resonances.
I have had success eliminating those unwanted noises by reducing the length of rod inside the bass. I assume you wouldn't want to offer an option with less length on the endpin as some players will want to utilise it, but perhaps it would be worth including with your product some instruction on how to best cut down the rod?

As of today, you can only pre-order through Kickstarter. If it's successful, I will be able to sell it on a dedicated website with some other products, my own website, Amazon, bass shops, etc as well as offer some more options as far as different length/diameter rods.

I'm giving this thread a bump because I have some good news: the endpin is happening!

My Kickstarter that "didn't work" put me in touch with an investor who was able to fund the entire project. He's a bass player and has funded a few other musical projects in the past so this was a good fit.

Glad I put it out there. For those who wanted one, here's an update on the state of things.

The first production batch is DONE and sitting in my living room, I'm waiting for packaging to arrive, and I'm doing product photos in about a week and a half. Should be ready to open the web shop by the end of the month.

The base price will still be $250 as advertised on the Kickstarter. There will also be the option to purchase it with or without tools and I'm offering a carrying pouch to keep everything together.

The next option I'm working on building for it is a "travel kit". If you play on rental basses a lot, I'm going to have a kit with several size rods (10mm, 8mm, 1/2", etc) to accommodate whatever the rental has.

This Saturday, I was at a party where a jazz trio was playing. The bassist had a custom drilled carbon fiber bent endpin installed in his carved Shen, and let me play with it a little bit. He was a tall guy, so it was prettily well adjusted to my size. I was pretty impressed with the feel and ergonomics of his set-up. He had the work done by the same luthier that I use, so I started seriously thinking about pulling the trigger.

But first I thought I'd research the topic on TalkBass. I also like the idea of being able to try different set-ups before drilling holes in my bass.

What luthier do you use? I'm considering having my bass drilled for an angled pin, but I don't think there's anyone locally who's eager to do it. I can't drive to New Mexico or LA in a reasonable amount of time, but Oregon isn't too far to go.

He said that Pete's Upright Bass Shop in Portland did the work. All my experiences with Pete have been favorable.

I'd never thought about using an angled endpin before, but after my brief experience on Saturday, it's really working on me Thumb position, especially seems much more ergonomically efficient.

Please PM me if you go through with this. I'm curious about how he determines exactly what set-up (height and angle) you need.

Well, it's been a while since I've asked Hammond-Ashley to do anything. Last time I wanted them to do some set up work on my bass they said they were too busy, but that was a long time ago. I've had some other annoying experiences with there so I guess I just don't think of them. It might not hurt to give them a call, I guess.

BTW I've never had them do any work for me, but I've visited the shop a bunch of times. They seem like good people, but I've had no personal experience with them. Sounds like you have and it hasn't been perfect... Too bad, since they're pretty close.

Happy 4th of July!

The web shop for the endpin is up and running at http://www.TheChromaticEndpin.com

The site is obviously young and very barebones for now. I'll be adding to it, mostly with videos and demonstrations, testimonials, that kind of thing—but I wanted to show everyone on TalkBass because the community here has been so supportive.

A few people have dove right in and bought endpins already, a bunch more have given me some very valuable feedback, and some have put me in touch with great contacts to help get the business moving.

When I was exploring possibilities to get my bass drilled they straight-up refused to do it.

The reasoning I've heard is that a lot of luthiers and shops are worried about the end block failing, but in my mind having a straight endpin with the tailgut attached to it would put more strain on the block than a Laborie endpin would. I may be completely wrong, but those are just my musings.
