New Aguilar Compressor pedal: "TLC Compressor"

Why would I buy a pedal train board just to accommodate 1 pedal, esp. when I already have a great pedal board? The better question is why would a manufacturer design a pedal around ONE pedal board design? Seems silly to me. At least the pedal is good.

I never said that you would need to buy a board to accommodate for 1 pedal. I'm just saying you have other opition. Rather than taking a saw to a brand new pedal and damaging the housing. At no point did I say you "have" to buy a pedaltrain.

It's here, and I have to say my initial impression is very favorable. I will not be posting a review until I've spent maybe a week working with it, so please take note of the date of this post and don't ask me for updates until a week has passed. :) But for the trigger-happy buyers out there, I can tell you my first half-hour with it has been entirely positive.

I played one for awhile today. It wasn't my bass or amp though, so hard to really get a good feel. It seems to have a bit more hi frequency detail than the Markbass, which gives it a nice cut (I was playing a passive P bass). When you stomp on it with hi ratio and low threshold it does really squash things...but that is to be expected. If I had to make a snap description I'd say the Aguilar is a bit more lively, the Markbass a bit smoother. I think you can dial up a very nice punch tone with either though...

Squashy like Tony Levin compressor as an effect squashy??

:hopeful:

First coments are giving me a hard GAS! :hyper:

Dave, when is the TLC hitting the European stores?

We've shipped them to our German distributor Gerhard Knauer, their contact info is on our international page. They can tell you which stores in Germany and Austria have them.

Paul's Bass Matters in the Netherlands has them, and Guitar Guitar in the U.K. Also, I know next week we are shipping to Spain, Switzerland and Finland. The best thing to do is check with your dealer or distributor. I think most will have them shortly.

Best,

Dave B.

thanks! It seems like my wait is over :bassist:

I've been toying around with mine for a few days now. I am really liking this pedal. It sounds very musical to my ears with only the tiniest loss of low-end - if any at all. Lots of flexibility to get just the compression you're after. Significantly better than my old Aphex Punch Factory which is a true love/hate for me. I'll rehearse with the TLC this Wed and then gig on Friday. I'm pretty certain I'll be quite happy with it.

I picked one up last night. I wasn't crazy about the prospect of having to walwart with the Markbass. Have to play this with a full band (will do that with guitar on Sat and bass in a funk situation on Sun), but it seems well behaved. Where I really like it so far is running the Sadowsky PJ passive into the comp with fairly low ratio and about mid threshold. Makes the passive speak a little more like the active setting without the active edge.

I'm ready to buy a new compressor now.

I had been leaning towards the Diamond bass compressor or the EBS Multicomp, however the Aguilar TLC is now a serious consideration.

I guess I'll just have to wait until you post your review.
:smug:

I've been really curious as to whether a compressor would be a good idea for live use with what I do (r&b/funk/soul/hip hop). If I did go this route, I would definitely get the TLC from what I'm hearing so far. I'm sure it would compliment my all Aggie rig ~> Tone Hammer - DB750 - GS410. Heck, even my Lull 5-string has an OBP-1!! :smug: How could I not get the TLC!!?? :D

Review now posted!!! http://www.ovnilab.com/reviews/aguilar.shtml

FWIW, if I was doing r&b/funk/soul/hip hop i would go with the Markbass, but that's just me.

Interesting read. I'll give it a work out in band situations both on guitar (both acoustic and electric) and bass this weekend. The thing that I didn't dig about the Markbass (other than the looks) was the required power supply. I don't presently have a board, and only use a couple of effects. I prefer that they will work with battery if need be. I did find the Markbass to be a bit warmer, but a tad darker as well. And if I don't dig it in the long run there's always a buyer at TB...

But that yellow is just so ugly!!! I can't do it. No matter how good it sounds. It's like trying to sleep with that ugly girl with a great personality. I just can't do it.

Hehe, different tastes I suppose

Makes me want the Markbass even more now; I'm looking forward to the "compression-as-an-effect" as well as just using it properly...

Psst Nostatic, I'll be your TB buyer :hiding:

:D
