New Ampeg Venture Series

Exactly! I’ve already invested $100 in a couple NL4 cords. Musta been a shortage of universal connectors when Ampeg was ramping up to build the Venture amps.
Don’t know. But I’m not all that concerned. I probably won’t have to buy any more speaker cables for a long time anyway, at least for bass.

One thing you could do is just buy an NL2 connector and convert one end of your NL4. I considered it but my NL4 cables were really heavy and old.

Of course you’re right. There are solutions. I’ll quit complaining because this is certainly a first world problem.

Edit: I wonder if I could take an end off of a 1/4 speaker cord and convert it into an NL2?

That’s progress for ya! On the bright side, every time I plug into it I like it even more than the last time. It’s very well thought out.
So JimmyM,

You have (or had) different B-15s, a PF-50T, a PF-350, a PF-800 an/copycatd now a V7. I recall you commenting that the PF series had a pretty tuby sound. I heard a music store salesman suggest the Venture series is a wannabe/copycat Darkglass.

Excluding the PF-50T, which amp will give me the most round, warm, vintage, B-15, etc. tone, the discontinued solid-state PF series or the Venture series?

I play mostly old county with some classic rock and bluegrass.

Wouldn't mind hearing other's opinions as well.

From the SS options, I would think that you would have a similar level of success with either the PF or Venture series. I'd give perhaps a slight nod to the Venture, but the PF series has most of the same tone-shaping tools (just not the SGT stuff).

The two biggest differences between the pf & Venture amps are the SGT circuit & the sweepable mids found on the Venture, in my case the SGT-DI. Both allow for more fine tuning, which makes the Venture the better choice for a B15 tone.

Interested in Jimmy's thoughts as well.

I think they all can get in the ballpark but the V7 is probably the easiest at it.

Has anyone found or have a suggestion for a cheaper alternative to the official V12 carry bag?

Laptop bag from Goodwill store. The older ones are deeper - I use one for my Tone Hammer 500 with a couple squares of yoga mat for extra padding.

At gigs with my 210, I roll one piece of yoga matt as a cab tilt/poor-man's gramma iso pad, and fold the other as an anti-slip/leveling platform for the head when the cab's tilted back. Works like a charm.

Speaking of PF series @JimmyM are all the reviews right that PF-500 is not reliable and likes to fail? I am now considering between Venture V3/V7 or PF-350/500. I won't lie budget is also a factor here. Head prices are okay but when going to the Cabs it is a huge difference between PF, older SVT or new Venture cabs. I would appreciate some guidance. Right now I own Ampeg BA-210 V2.

@libekgz,
With almost any ported cab marketed to bass players, step down the E string toward the nut, one fret at a time.
At first all frequencies on the string are above the resonant frequency of the cab, supported by the ports.
Stepping down, at some point the fundamental frequency of the note falls below the resonant frequency of the cab (and then it not only falls off in dBs, which we all know, but it also sounds different. I described a simple test by which anyone could hear this if interested.)

When the higher freqs are supported by the ports, while the fundamental is in the freq range where the ports have already crêped out, it sounds a little sour, has less impact, and is inconsistent with notes played higher up. I don't believe I'm the only person who hears this; I'm sure that many people who wonder why their low E is unsatisfying just haven't figured this out yet.

The VB-88 claims -3dB @ 28Hz. I own one and already posted that I believe this number. The 410 and 115 also claim such numbers.
With these cabs you can still, if needed or desired, roll off a good sounding low E and it still sounds good.

There's an exaggerated loathing of 41Hz on this forum. We all understand by now why this must often be rolled down. But it could still sound good while rolled down. I think the way low E is treated by almost every manufacturer is scandalous. It should be embarrassing to a self-respecting bass forum!

Well the PF500 did have some issues when it came out in 2011 but they were pretty well fixed within a year. I think the 500 is a killer amp, used to have an 800 and still have a 350 but I like my V7 better than either. The V cabs I’m not familiar with yet.

Thank you, that helps much. I am willing to go light and still retain decent tone. I like my BA210 but it's a combo and I am stuck with both speaker cabinet as well as the amp. I will see what options I have with PF series first since my playing is still on amatour level in my judgement.

So, sorry if it’s been mentioned but I noticed on Sweetwater they’ve taken several of the SVT cabs off the site like the 410HE and the 112AV. I wonder if these venture cabs are meant to be the replacement or if they’re planning on phasing in a new SVT line similar to these new cabs.
The 410HE is one of my favorite cabs.
