New Arkham Class D “Beast”

Mike designed the tantra, Mike designed the EA doubler. Mike has consulted on numerous other amplifier and cabinet products over the years. If you have some experience in this industry I would love to know about it.

J Wolf, any chance you can put diferent sound samples up Beast VS Sonic?

No not really, but anecdotally speaking I would say if you like a more vintage sound with tons of horsepower and a fairly streamlined feature set, the beast is unbelievably great. And if you prefer a more fully featured channel strip type of approach and tone, the tantra is the top of that heap

you're entitled to believe whatever you want. I trust people who have played and designed the thing more than people who have speculated about it. It's all the same to me, ive played and enjoyed 3 versions of it.

from what I heard, the Tantra has been tweaked to perfection, I think there most be some other reason
maybe you just need instruction?
I would love to pay the Buks for the Tantra

IIRC Mike was a collaborator on the design of the Tantra, and was selling powered versions of the preamp in a pseudo-partnership with Sonic Farm.

So he's not some dude who didnt know how to adjust the preamp, he had intimate knowledge of the amp's functions.

That said, he's banned on TB so wont be able to respond to your comment.

thoug, what he says about the Tantra, sounds like pure nonsens.? & like some dude, with no hint.

I have a 2DI4 (upon which, at Mike's instigation, the Tantra was based). I've played the earliest version of the Tantra -- it, while excellent and innovative in many respects, did indeed display the issues that Mike mentions. The Tantra did not sound as clear and would not get as loud as the 2DI4 into the identical poweramp (which I also have, as a separate piece) as the Tantra used internally. Same deal when running the Tantra as a pre into a separate poweramp.

What Jake says about Mike's experience in the industry is true (not to mention that he was a top-level player on the international stage) and he is about as far from clueless with regard to this stuff as one can be. Even if you didn't know this, the man says that he "had to withdraw his support" from the [Tantra] project -- would someone who, as you put it, "needs instruction" be in that position in the first place?

I hope that the new versions of the Tantra have resolved the design and QC issues of the earlier ones (Mike's post that you replied to is from 2018 -- maybe they have indeed "tweaked the Tantra to perfection" since then). It's not an amp for everyone, but, if they have, it has the potential to be something really fantastic for those who can make intelligent use of it.

There's more I could say, but I'm trying to be respectful to all parties involved (and to bear in mind that, while comparisons with and discussion of other products is natural in the course of discussing any gear, this is not a Tantra thread).

In the earlier version of the tantra there was what I consider to be a gain bottleneck, as I also was using a 2di4 with a pascal (RAD1000p) and much preferred its tone, punch and volume Over the tantra which had those parts integrated with all the other bells and whistles. It's my understanding that it's been solidly rectified at this point.

But for me, I'd buy the 2500w version, it freaking slayed

Hi Lowendtech
Im not an expert on amp-tec, but I have knowlege of that what Mike says about Sonic Farm is not to be taken serious.
dont know if thats the reason for not being on the forum any more, you have to dig in to it your self

What are you asking or trying to understand here? Did Mike get banned because of anything to do with sonic far

What are you needing clarity about regarding the Tantra?

Im just saying
Yeah---there were some issues with the Tantra that the designer wasn't able to resolve. Gain structure issues. So I had to pull my support. You couldn't get full gain from the preamp without clipping the SS section (eq).I'll tell ya'---between the 2di4 and the Abyss---both are as good as it gets.
My rig is essentially the Beast without the HPF. Best integrated amp I've used.
(respect to Mikes TEC knowlege)
here mike says he had to pull the support to SF, do to the Amp not kind of doing what it shut, Im just saying that was not the reason why he had to/ as he puts it "pull the support"
it is simply not the Truth. why he had to stop with SF is simply a hole different story, & I think its just negative
an shut be taken down, he steps on a product he has left, & not telling the truth of why he had to "pull the
support" as he puts it.
I know this is a Arkham thread(wish i had the Beast) but some one pull this nonsens down from the
Great Arkham Beast thread

Well, it sounds like you're really clear that whatever side of whatever story you've heard is the gospel truth. I'd remind you that there are 3 sides to every story.

Yes, this is an Arkham thread, so let's stop discussing things having nothing to do with Arkham.

I agree, thats why I dont share what I know here
( I dont have any secondhand storys)

thanks, I didn't say second hand, I said one side.

I've spoken at length to both Zoran and mike. And I'm not on talkbass commenting about people's personal or professional motives or capacities.

In relevant news, the Oracle continues to impress me. I think it's my favorite arkham product to date, and it is a fantastic front end for cleaner and more linear bass heads. It's a pedalboard lifer pedal!

(yes)is there any sound samples or videos of the Beast?(only seen one from Iphone)
any comparing of Form Factor BI1000DI & Arkham Beast
or is the FF just to clean to even be compared with the Beast?

@Inkadibass, re. the Tantra I'll only say that I stand by my post #249 (which only applies to the earliest version of the amp -- I have not, like Jake, played subsequent versions) and that, if you have some first-hand experience with the Tantra (or questions about it), you might try posting in either of these recent threads on it, which unfortunately did not get much traction. You might give some exposure to an innovative design from a couple of small builders, thereby: Sonic Farm Tantra, Sonic Farm 'Tantra' Demo.

I've not played the Beast, but I own a Zephyr and have played it with a few different poweramps and I played the first version of the Form Factor amp (they're on the second, I believe, which refines the first in a few respects). I did not get to play the two amps back to back (though I did get to directly A/B the FF amp with the Glockenklang Blue Rock I had at the time) and I played them some time apart but, for what it's worth, I found the FF to feel a little more raw and lively than the Glock -- a bit more extended in the deep bass, too -- but less well-behaved. Both amps were loud and hit hard through the Aggie GS410 I tried them through, but the FF seemed to hit a little harder. FF had noticeably more hiss than the Glock (which they might have corrected in the second version of the amp).

Zephyr I'd say is natively smoother than the FF though can get hairier, as well. Much less hiss -- both the amp output and the D.I. are very quiet on mine). I guess the FF is more open and "modern" sounding in the sense of sounding wide -- maybe a bit like a grittier (grit's not necessarily the right word -- it's clean -- but there's something going on -- a little raw and lively in a good way) Euphonic Audio Doubler -- but the Zephyr can get a pretty extended and sweet top end, too (bright switch opens it way up) and it has a very healthy but not insane amount of deep lows on tap.

Re. demos of the Beast, I dunno. There are some clips of the Zephyr out there, including in this thread (some of mine included -- some of those better than others) which should at least give you an idea of the front end. @scubaduba's preamp comparison thread featuring the Arkham Oracle also has some nice sound samples with what should be the same core circuitry/sound as the Zephyr/Beast.

The Beast might come across tighter than the Zephyr, courtesy of its internal 24 dB/octave HPF built-in (in addition to the more gentle, higher-voiced HPF selectable from the front panel). I'd rather record with the Zephyr/Beast, I'm almost certain -- I think it's a higher quality execution of a more familiar core sound. For live performance, I guess it'd depend on what you like.

Sorry I can't be more precise -- I'd have to play the FF again (preferably with my cabs -- and, remember, I played the older version) to make a good comparison. Still, I hope it's of some help.

Good luck with your quest!

Very curious to hear your report on the higher wattage Tantra. It was absolutely night and day for me compared to the earlier Pascal 1000w model.

Still kinda an apples to oranges comparison between the beast and the tantra, because of the inherently different voicings, design goals, feature sets, etc.
