New Bass Damaged During Setup

Cool color on a cool bass (Dargie?).
I would ask for a nominal refund ($50- 100?), free return shipping to me and the right to return the bass if it's unacceptable to me in person, on their dime.

Then I would probably play it all the damned time with no worries and never look back.

Sounds like you may have been looking for awhile...? Bummer, but good suggestions so far. Personally if it's something I'd been trying to find for a long time and the price was right, I would accept free shipping and free return shipping with a guarantee of a refund if needed.

I haven't been looking that long. I had a recent thread on it - was going to buy a SUB Ray5, but figured that if I loved it I'd eventually end up with an EBMM. I started shopping for some on sale and found a couple at Bass Central that looked like good fits. But then I remembered the fancy green ones from a few years ago and Googled just to ogle at images. One popped up and I called the store - it was still in stock! Went from there.

Being NOS it was a few hundred bucks off already. I'd love even a token gesture like free shipping or something small. But I want the bass.

Accidents happen, and as you noted, they were honest enough to admit it. Hopefully they find a fair way to make up for it.

A refinish probably won't perfectly recapture the original, and very cool finish. If you are actually going to "play" it, it won't be the last dent, ding or scratch.

Shed a tear; observe an appropriate period of mourning, and then have a great time with that thing.

As said earlier, a simple $30-$50 drop fill by any competent tech minimizes the ding to near non-noticablity.

Personally, I'd be fine if the shop threw in a couple of sets of strings or something like that. It's on the back, no big deal and they disclosed it. Plus the price was already pretty much rock bottom as you said. I am quite fussy, but in this case I wouldn't blink an eye. That damage is something you might easily have done yourself with a bit of bad luck.

I think I like the overall gist of responses: sucks that it happened to a rare, very nice instrument, but: it's still a rare, very nice instrument. If they'll play a bit of nice for the ding, sweet. And if you're reasonable, sounds like you are, then they should go for it.

It looks almost exactly the right size to stash a dime of weed under some tape, btw. You may have been granted an unintended boon.
