New bass... or do I really need one?

Yes, I have tried all kinds of settings to no avail. Maybe it's my own ignorance as well.
But seriously, I'd recommend you get a nice, affordable, squier Precision to go ALONG with your modern sounding current bass. Not an affinity, but a squier standard, or a VM or CV would be even nicer probably.
You want tone? Listen to Queen - iirc, most of that was done with fender precision basses, as was a ton of other classic rock. One pickup, passive, but WHAT a pickup!

9YG: I for one like having multiple basses (I currently have five: two P's, two J's, and a Ric). Why? Because I find it fun to be able to play different basses for different songs. Do I *need* five basses? Of course not. Do I *want* five basses? Yes!
I've been playing bass since 1972. For most of those years, I only owned one bass at a time. But over the past few years, I have found that I like having choices at my fingertips!
Life has an expiration date, so my advice is, do whatever makes you happy in life! If you like your current ESP, and if you also like the Aerodyne and Blacktop that you are looking at, I say buy both of those other basses and have three basses that you like! You can always turn around and sell a bass or two down the road if you decide to make changes.
Nothing wrong with that as long as you are honest with yourself. You deserve a treat!

Hmmm... I asked since it seems to be fine FOH but of course that’s a different environment. It would suck to buy the new bass and find out you still have the same problem at jam sessions. Perhaps you could post up your settings for feedback.
Then again as mentioned it is nice to have a second bass when gigging.
Maybe a dedicated EQ pedal would help? My rig is a little weird but outboard EQ really helps me get the most out of it.
Since you know the bass can sound great, why not ask the sound person what they're doing at the board to make you sound so good. If its an EQ thing (which it likely is) you could always swap the preamp or pickups which are relatively cheap and completely reversible. I doubt that there's something happening at the FOH that you can't closely approximate with some sort of EQ or compression on your end.

Amp: treble 1, hi mid 2, low mid 3, bass 1, boost 2.
SansAmp BDDI: blend 4, treble 12, presence off, mid 12, bass 1.
I run a spectra comp at 1, DOD OD 250, DOD boneshaker, boss chorus. The Sans and chorus are always on.

Try turning the sansamp off. Or cutting bass and treble to see if the mids you want come out. The sansamp can really scoop the sound even just flat.

The chorus might be making your sound feel a little thin or lacking in impact. It could also be a matter of your EQ conflicting with the guitar. Have you tried your signal a bit more raw at rehearsal to see what happens?
I'd keep your ESP 'cause you like it. And then get a regular passive Pbass (not the Blacktop). You simply can't go wrong having a decent Pbass. MIM, whatever, just a plain vanilla P.
