New bass... or do I really need one?

Good point! 2 best days of a boat owners life, when they buy it and when they sell it.
Just get a regular MIM P, no effects, straight in, amp cab up off the floor, should be fine.
Alternatively, well, I’ve never exactly tried this myself, but you could possibly get one of the FOH speakers the soundguy uses for the PA, a PA speaker stand, a sufficient power amp (if the PA speaker is non-powered) and a small version of the mixing board he uses, and then use that as your "amp" (going to it from your SansAmp as normal [if that’s what you do at the venue]), adjusting his mixer settings as needed for your room. A variable might be if the soundguy had everything/everyone running through the PA and slotted each instrument into its own EQ range. I dunno - there could be a lot of variables there, but in some cases it may be possible to reproduce his PA rig or perhaps a mini-version of his PA rig to use as your "amp".
Like say the mixer he’s using is a Yamaha MG20XU, you could get a MG06X (or MG10XU) from the same series and use it as your preamp, get a smaller but sufficient version of his power amp, and a smaller (single) version of his FOH speakers.
Of course, the venue might have some ultra fancy rig or some grab bag of long out of production miscellaneous PA gear that you wouldn’t be able to recreate, but just a thought

Did you try cutting bass and treble and then use gain to make up the difference? A cheap eq pedal might also get you there.
Otherwise as some have said, go try a bunch, notate what you do and don’t like. Check YouTube’s of the ones on your hit list. It just gives you a good idea. Save this and by the spring or summer, you should have a better idea of what you really want. Maybe it’s time for a better amp instead.

Maybe you don't NEED one, but its fun to go shopping, and if you're gigging, like ya said, why wouldn't you want a backup?

I’d probably try starting with just the bass and amp in a jam session setting and trying to dial in your tone. What usually works for me is having the bass EQ settings run flat, amp settings Low:12 Low mid:2-3 High mids:10 Treble: 12
When you find the best tone you can without the extra pedals I’d add those in gradually. Just my .02

If you are unhappy with your tone, and you can't make it sound "right" to you ( with eq, tweaks etc. ) then maybe you SHOULD be looking for a different bass. What kind of tone are you looking for? Give us examples from famous recordings.
I let God choose my next bass. Take for instance new years day. I'm surfing around for a multi effects board peddle thing and I type in "used Helix guitar center" the first thing on the list is a cool little neckthru bass named Lace bass helix. Now If that ain't a sign the $199 price tag was for sure.
I went through this. As a matter of fact it started when I joined TB so I blame TB for my GAS
I had the bass in my profile pic since 1977. When I joined TB all of a sudden I began gassing for a new bass. I bought a VM Jaguar - the long scale one (sold it but kinda wish I kept it cause it was cool looking but didn't sound as good as when I played it in the store). After that I found a Dimension American HH IV for around $1000. It wasn't doing it for me. Traded it for another bass, a 79/80 Fender Precision, which I finally sold to buy a Stratocaster. Now I play guitar, but that bass in my profile pic... that 77 Fender P bass, I can get any tone I want out of it, even Rickenbacker when I use a pick.
So, I'd say to you go ahead and buy another bass to satisfy that desire. You may wind up putting out that flame realizing the bass you have is all you need.
Of course you need another one ... and after it at least one more ...
I just made my list, it contain of 13 pieces. It's an illness, but I accepted it with joy! Do I need them - no!
Do I want them, ooo Yes!
I mean, I don't want to sound like some but I guess some inspirations are Duff, Justin Chancellor (sp), Tim Commerford when I want dirty and Geddy. I'm sure there are more I can't think of right now.
Alrighty... first thank you all for your input! I tinkered today with some EQ settings starting with the amp then moved on to pedals. I have it sounding pretty sweet at home so we will see how that translates. We do have a gig tomorrow too and the FOH guy is awesome. That being said, I'm still going to go test drive some P Basses and if I find one, trade off the Epi Tbird. It was my 1st real bass so hard to part with but it's not getting played.

The Aerodyne is a great bass for the price.

Asking this group if you need another bass is like walking in a bar full of drunk people and asking if you need another drink!
The Aerodynes are pretty sweet basses, I don't think you can go wrong with one.
I had an Epi T bird as well....i couldnt get along with the ergonomics at all, neck almost too beefy etc.
Dont get in a hurry with P basses, there are LOTS out there...my 1st was a USA Peavey Fury which is a P bass type with a J shaped neck BUT the neck was incredible in the way the neck edges were rolled, no sharp frets etc.
Matter of fact that bass is a reference....my MIM basses (and guitars) have all needed neck and fret work (rolled edges etc) which i do myself.....neck feel and weight are everything to me and most MIM Fenders ive picked up need at least a bit of neck dress but there are steals on MIM basses if you look long enough.
