I’m hoping to start this one very soon. I've got that building itch again :D I've got to keep this monster as light as possible. Chambering is out of the question so I want to go with light woods and a headless design. I have designed and started on the heart of the beast, a massive neo magnet humbucker. Feel free to throw me some wood ideas.

34" scale
5 laminate neck
Neck wood Bubinga and Jatoba paduak
set neck
Fretted
morado fret board
Fiber optic side markers (blue this time)
Sapele body
Figured Canary top
Wenge pup cover
Dual truss
Massive neo humbucker with coil splitting
aguilar obp1 pre
My headless tuner bridges and string retainer (new and improved design!;) )

Looks like one of Greg's designs, which i really like, BTW.
That's the same kind of shape I'm thinking of for my next fretless 5.

MMMMM......bubinga and canarywood stringers sounds superb Wilser.........

Interested .......why redwood? I have a strat body that's made out of QS redwood and I love the tone. It's just soooo, dentable...but I sure do love me some redwood. It's a local tree too!

Matching covers
Dual truss
Massive single neo humbucker with coil splitting
18volt Bart 3 band pre

I designed this one in sketchup. I printed out a different copy to scale its going to be crazy! Don’t know how I will tune it up with that bridge lol :hmm:

New and improved tuner deal, my favorite part. Like Wilser says, cut down on the size of the single cut and you got a winner.:bassist:

use bubinga and canarywood stringers for the neck!!! please! pretty please!

Love the design, but I would shrink the singlecut a little bit. It looks huge, IMHO. I would take it about 2" closer to the neck, but with the same shape.

Ohhhh man canary wood would kick major butt! The size of the single cut is going to be massive, I like the cartoon look of it. I will however thin it out around the edges to help make up for my sad single cut greediness.

After sleeping on it and thanks to the good advice of my Talkbass Peers I came up with this. I kinda want to put the controllers in the singlecut.... also the bottom will go better with the bridge/tuners

I just ordered a butt load of wood....bubinga, morado, sapele, leopardwood, african mahogany, canarywood, paduak, santos mahogany, and jatoba. The wait for UPS will pretty much kill me.

BUT in the meantime I have started on the humbucker. I have the first coil ready to go, here are some pics
Here is the coil before winding. It has neo magnets and wooden bobbins painted flat black. The magnet hole alignment didn’t come out perfect, they are however spaced perfect for the strings. Since the poles won’t be exposed this will suffice but it still pisses me off a little.

And here’s a pic after winding with 42 awg frmvar I wound this one to 9.48k. It’s the bridge position, wound clockwise. One down one to go!

The big honkin humbucker coils are done! :hyper: Just so you can get an idea of how big these are each one is the size of a six string Bart soapbar. I know what you’re thinkin, this guys from Texas he really believes bigger is better yada yada yada. No there’s a method to my madness I assure you. With the size of the neo magnets I had to make the bobbins this big to get enough wire on to get the ohms I wanted. I wanted at least mid 9 on the resistance for each coil because I want to run the bucker like a music man, in parallel this should give me around 4k which will be perfect for the preamp.
Here’s a pic of them together I wound the second one counter clockwise to 9.65k. Now I need to solder the wires on and pot them.:D

hmm, the top half of the bass looks oddly familiar ;)

Good to see you're getting started on another bass, glad to see someone else has stepped up and started their own pickups as well! Maybe I should get into that...

I can't wait to see some progress, I'll keep this thread watched

Thanks, but its actually a throw off model of this scroll bass I designed. Which if anything is Ritter inspired. I really wanted to build the scroll but the single cut won the toss. You should totally build your own pups its very rewarding!:D

I ordered a little bit of exotic wood to have for neck wood and boy was I surprised when I opened the box with the canary wood in it. Figure out the kazoo, I asked for all straight grain but I'm not about to complain. I assume its crotch, It has it throughout the entire board but the bottom 24" is really stunning so I cut the board in half and I will re-saw it tomorrow for tops. Here is a pic rough planed and wiped damp. Once sawn this will be the top for this bass.:hyper:

Other woods from left to right:
Leopard wood, paduak bubinga, sapale, jatoba, marado, and santos mahogany. These will be used to make multi laminate necks. Its hard to get pictures with good lighting inside of the cabin....

I got the neck blank glued up today. It’s still drying so no pics yet. The neck will be a 3 laminate of Bubinga and Jatoba. I book matched the top and started joining it. I won't glue it until I have the body ready. I'm pretty happy with the way the canary wood top came out. I can’t decide on which direction to use it. :hmm:
