New Build- My Eighth, and a challenge

BarkerBass said:
how do those Duncans sound? I've been wondering about them for a jazz bass build I have planned, what's their tonal range and response like?

Fantastic build btw

They sound HUGE. I picked them cuz they're the closest I could get to a
Bird pup without getting into Lull price range.
I haven't played it enough to really comment too much, but from what I heard they sound great. I'll definitely use them again.
The real part I gotta rave about is the bridge. I love the new Hipshot D bridge. A bit of a pain to install, but well worth it. I think it sets the bass off very nicely.

I must say Rip, Ive never really liked T Birds that much except for when I first started out but once I played one and got to feel that neck dive I never experienced T Bird GAS again. This one, on the other hand, wow. Seriously nice work, IMO dont let this baby go if you were planning too. Get rid of the Myrtlewood (if you need an excuse to keep this one) because even though the Myrtlewood is beautiful, this ... just wow. Can't wait to see final pics, subbed!

I'll get those pics as soon as the lacquer cures. I had some shrinkage issues on the back I couldn't ignore. I want this bass to be just right.

I played it at church's few weeks back, and even though it was nothing that made me put it down and pick up my beater Bird, I felt the need to revisit a few things.

One of the things was the neck. With the fiber optics installed, the fretboard is an extra 1/8" thick. So the neck ended up very fat, and kindy square-ish. So I thinned it down and rounded it to what I now feel is a very comfortable profile.

The cavity covers have been the other bane of my existence. Making them out of the black limba, I couldn't get them thin enough for my purposes. The switch for the fiber optics is also an issue. The placement made it so that while playing, it was possible to turn it off accidentally. I plan on using plastic mirrors for the covers since they are thinner.

Of course, I had to relocate the bridge a hair to correct the string spacing. Luckily the bridge completely covers the fix.

On a good note, while refinishing it after my fixes, I stole my wife's laundry rack, modified it a little, and can now spray the whole bass at once. Makes for a HUGE time saver.

After it cures for another week or two, I'll start to buff it out. Unless I see more shrinkage on the back. I want the finish to be level. No pores showing. I filled with shellac but must have missed a few spots. So it has taken a few extra coats of nitro to get it all flat.

Been biding my time as the lacquer cures (I may still add another can or two, painting outside you lose ALOT to the wind).

The other bass that is one I'm not sure of the number of, the blue glitter bass, has failed miserably. After spending hours applying the metal flake, the bass if course was not level. I tried to take a shortcut and ended up with a gooey glaze after two weeks of dry time. The stuff was supposed to be dry in 20 minutes.

So I stripped it and spent some more time carving and shaping. The neck is now super thin and comfy. The body carving is being taken as an art project at this point. I'm doing things as they hit me. If all else fails, I paint it black and let my son have it.

I'm gonna give dying it one more try score painting it black. More on that at some point I'm sure.

Meanwhile, I wait for lacquer to cure and debate on adding extra coats.
