New Build: Noah SSC

This is it . . . with a nod to one of my favorite acoustic guitar builders.

Leaving the lower horn off is quite ballsy, but might just work ...

Now that the instrument has such a strong upper "forward"-motion, why not adjust the f-holes accordingly ?

No doubt the treble f-hole will need to shift rearward . . .

I was LOVING this design.
IMHO, it just looks like the lower horn got cut off.
Now the balance of what was good composition seems off as well.

And from someone who has had a couple of "stumpy" lower cutaway bass designs built;
Ergonomically, you would be paying a big price.
It will not stay on your leg when seated.

lol . . . the horn did get cut off! But it was a clean cut . . .

We presumed that reaction would be somewhat polarized . . . more of a for or against sort of thing.

But that's why the drawings are up . . . to see what if.

FOR CLARITY'S SAKE EVERYONE: this instrument will be bound in bloodwood with and edge front and back, so don't imagine it as "rounded" edges, but as a bound top.

I worked on a SC design with the lower horn just like on yours but without the cut close to the neck.

Ahhh, yes. Very nice.

I was thinking of that too, but settled on this way for now.

Can anyone out there (except Rodent and JC) tell me what acoustic builder I'm nodding to with this?

Eleonn -- did you ever build yours?

Note on -- FOR CLARITY'S SAKE (see above): Eleonn's illustration better reflects how the edging on mine will be, in bloodwood.

Got it. It's just the original body design is SOoo nice,
I was just being as discouraging as possible.

Eleonn's does look cool.
It seems a lot of folks get that "stumpy lower horn monkey" on their back.
Early on, George Furlanetto made a "stumpy" ,
There's others, but I can't think of them at the moment.

All's I'm sayin' is;
If you want your design playable when seated - -don't do the stumpy!

Very well taken. I'm an F-Bass owner/player and big fan, and I never knew F did a cut-off before!

My mind is not 100% made up, but I want to see what people say . . .

My problem is that I've always had issues with a single-cut's tendency to resemble a Humpback Whale, a tendency that depends on the lower horn more than people realize.

So, I'm wanting something that departs from that . . . and that is in keeping with my own design concepts, etc. Tall order

That was a prototype for a second build. Got 4 of them and I'm planning to make some templates before choose one. I realized the problem when playing sitted down so I tried to play a bit with it. Wilser also gave some input about that lower horn and that was the result of that. Id definitely try a template with that horn before building it but for me it looks darn sexy. My build will have the edges rounded. You cant see that on the render cause I dont know how to do it :hiding::p

My prototype was somekind inspired on a bass with is simply stunning and is this one:

EDIT: I gave to the waist a bit more dramatic curve trying to avoid the sitted-playing problem which was really obvious when I saw the pic from the original bass (the one from the pic above).

I tracked down a picture of that old “F”:

IMO the way your lower horn curves away from the neck minimizes the "Whale" effect.

FWIW, my 1st (constructed) attempt at avoiding “Whale mouth”(built by Russ Laggan):

A little more leg space than your "stumpy", but still useless for sitting.

Wow . . . the bass in this picture is humbling . . . well done and lots of attention to detail.

I'd say a version of your top body design with the headstock of the lower

LB-Headstock.jpg

still, if it was me, I'd shorten up the lower horn by 15% - 20% from where it is in the top image.

I'm definitely NOT a fan of the lower horn in the lower image. for me it has nothing to do with aesthetics - it's all about ergonomics. while that stumpy lower horn may be visually appealing to you, it definitely will cause the future owner issues when they attempt to play in a seated position

of course this is just my two Indian Rupees on the topic, so it's definitely not a hard, fast rule of instrument design

all the best,

R

Yes Rodent, I agree . . . in fact while you were posting I was already drawing a new horn that is smaller and more in line with the lower horn on the headstock. I'll put it up later today, . . . off for a bike ride!
