New Build: Noah SSC

The body template completed today:

BTW, at this time I have decided to do a bolt-on design rather than the neck-thru. There are a number of reasons for this, but I will do a neck thru later. For now, since it's conceptual, I want to get the details of this build surrounded.

why not glue neck? So, are going to add contours, or just round the edges (or possibly binding)? I am not sure if you mentioned what the neck and fingerboard woods will be, also If i remember correctly, it is fretless, right?

Sure, I could do a glue neck . . . but I'm kinda following Rob Allen's lead and he uses bolt-on, so we'll see.

This will have full contouring to the body. That's why I left the extra space on the upper bout.

Fretless? Yes. Maple and purpleheart neck. Ebony fingerboard.

The Ash body frame/core:

The top, with Walnut veneer, ready to glue to the frame:

The top, ready for preliminary sealing and leveling with Z-Poxy. Spalted Maple is very soft in some places and so I want to firm up and protect the surface and edges right away with the Z-Poxy.

The back inside. The Spalted Maple back will not be installed for a while yet. At this stage I will turn my attention to the neck and building a new neck pocket template specifically for this application:

Looking sharp! I think you'll find that CA glue will do a much better job of penetrating the spalt then Z-poxy, the epoxy at normal consistency would more than likely just create a shell that could later cause problems. If your set on using the epoxy you could thin it with acetone to help it set into the wood a bit deeper :)

Thanks very much!

I can see how that would be true; even tho' Z-Poxy is very thin, I see that the CA would penetrate the softwood much more thoroughly than Z-Poxy.

However . . . where do I find CA in the proper quantity and consistency to cover a whole top?

LMI has it in larger amounts, http://www.lmii.com/CartTwo/thirdpr...Adhesives&NameProdHeader=Cyano-Acrylate+Glues
I've also bought bigger bottles from Home Depot although not cheap. 5-6 of the smaller tubes would probably do that top.

I have bought the thinnest type of CA glue and just drizzle it over the entire board from the bottle it comes in. It soaks in really easily from what I have seen. It also spreads nicely so there wasn't any "missed spots" while drizzling.

This may all be different with your wood, but you can always do it over and over again until all of the wood it soaked and hard right?

Stare at this for a few seconds and watch it play with your brain. The ash will bulge thru the template. Wild.

What a waste of figured walnut:bawl:. I know it will look sweet when you contour and everything, but i just hate the idea of that amazing walnut being buried inside the body. Looks awesome though. Whats the weight of the body?

The Walnut is too thin to use for anything else. Too thin to even sand on . . . so this was it.

Not sure on the body so far . . . a pound or pound and a half maybe?

^^JC & Scotty,

So, this is new to me. I have to order some stuff from LMI so that's convenient, but which one to order? and how much?

How do you apply it? For Z-Poxy, I use plastic scrapers to move it around and level it.

Do you brush, spreader/scraper, . . . ?

FWIW most CA is the same, some are just thinner than others, just use the clearest you can find. I like the Hot Stuff from LMI, but I've also had good results using the cheap stuff in small tubes available at most retail stores (that's what I meant by "5-6 of the smaller tubes" in my previous post) I usually spread it on with a razor blade. I suggest wearing a respirator and eye protection when doing a large amount because the fumes can get brutal. Also don't be surprised when things heat up, literally!;)
