New cab build

Thanks .

The Duratex is very easy to apply . It rolls on with a textured roller and cleans up with water just like latex paint . It's kind of expensive at around $50 a gallon but it goes a long way too , I've done 3 cabinets with it so far and still have enough for one more . I gave this cabinet two coats . I know that someone has kits now that have a smaller amount for a lot less now but I don't have the link . Maybe google Duratex .

I guess I never put the dimentions of the cabinet in before for anyone who would want to build one too . Mine is :
23" high x 20.5" wide x 14.5" deep with the baffle recessed 1" .

The 1" recessed baffle worked on mine but didn't leave much room from the grill to the speaker surround so it would be better to have the cab 15"deep and recess the baffle 1.5" just to make sure to have enough clearance to the grill . So a better spec would be :
23" high x 20.5" wide x 15" deep with the baffle recessed 1.5 "

The ports are 4" x 5.1/2"long .

All the wood is 1/2"birch . All the braces are about 1.5" ,when I cut the plywood to size that was what was left over so it worked out good . I'm going to add the dimentions into the first post too . For someone who wanted to build one without the horn the ports could be mounted in the front of the cabinet too .

I haven't heard if anything that take duratex off without taking the glue in the plywood out with it either. Maybe run oved it with some real coarse like 36grit sandpaper or something to knock down the bumps/scuff it up then glue new covering over it.

Again, nice job on the cab.

Duratex may be similar in appearance to "bedliner", but it's not the same. Because it has an acrylic base, I expect that many commercial strippers would attack it.

This wouldn't apply to catalyzed factory finishes.

Blues Bass 2 ... I was looking to build an extension cab for my Markbass CMD 121P. I'm looking at buying a single Eminence CB158 but I'm interested in building a cab that's small and portable, SPL efficient and capable of growling my 5-string bass (low B at 30Hz). I downloaded a program called WinISD that's supposed to give me correct dimensions and port specs to achieve what I'm aiming for but the program demands a box that's gigantic. What dimensions would you recommend (with front port similar to Fender Rumble cabs or your Avatar cab) that could achieve the specs I need? OR.. perhaps the CB158 isn't the right speaker for me ..... (so confusing). Thnx

I used the Eminence plans for the medium cabinet . The tuning is fairly high but I didn't notice any dropoff much below low E on my b string . There is also a plan for a larger cab that is tuned lower but won't handle as much power . I think if you built a cab the same size as the one I built with the same porting you should be good to go , that woofer really is a good one . Here's a link to the Eminence cab specs .

Thanks for the response "Blues Bass 2" ... I imagine the .PDF would be useful if I understood it, but your mention that a similar design to the one you feature in his thread would work best. Do I need a horn and crossover too? Can the design be ported to the front (I prefer front ports)? Can you give me a breakdown of the cost of the cab? Thnx loads again.

You don't need a tweeter at all if you don't want one . If you are going for more of an old school tone the CB158 sounds good on its own and has decent mids . Also yes , as long as you have room on the front baffle you can front port it . I only put the ports on the back because the horn took up too much room on the front to fit the ports too and still have a compact cabinet the right cubic inch size for the porting .

I got the cab size by scrolling down the pages of the PDF to the medium size cab plans . The plans call for an interior size of 2.75 cubic feet including the speaker with two 4" ports 5.5" long . I figured how wide I wanted it to be and then how tall I could make it with the horn and woofer on the front baffle . Then I used those two numbers to get how deep it needed to be to get the cubic feet .

reviving a zombie thread (sorta) here but saw this on Stumbo's new thread catching up on DIY builds.

Was contemplating doing a couple of PA cabs next year using some 12" (Beta, Delta LFA, DeltaLite) and the Econowave horn.

Which crossover design did you wind up using? There's a few, one that's for bass drivers >95 dB/W, and another <95 dB/W, plus some variants.

And how are you liking the sound of this now that you've had it a while?

Nice looking build, btw

I'm using the >95dB/W . Invalid Link Removed

I sold the cab a couple months after I built it so I can't say how it's doing now but it was very good when I had it , very smooth clear high end . I did put the econowave horns in our bands modified Avatar 112 cabs to use as pole mount speakers . We have Delta Pro 12s in those and I did try them for bass guitar and they worked great as a pair but I've since gone to fEARfuls so they are relegated to PA use again . We only play a few gigs a year and those have supplied sound so they have just been sitting at our practice space . Here is a pic of them when I was trying them at home .

By the way , a cab with a 3015 Kappalite and one of these horns would be a killer cab for small to medium gigs . It was great with the CB158 but for a stand alone cab I think the 3015 would put it over the top .

good to hear, the Delta Pros are 12s I've not considered :hmm:

How do you like the sound of those in a PA setting with the Econowave? Sounds like this could be the ticket for what I'm trying to do

I like the idea of the fEARFUL 12/6/1 for PA but the cost is a bit of a factor :(

So you liked them for bass as well it sounds, could be interesting to use one for my soon-to-be-modified double bass rig.

Thanks for the photos and info, much appreciated :D

I'm really curious about the off-axis mids and highs response using a 15, IIRC the beaming cut-off (-6 dB) is around <1000 Hz and the low pass freq on those EW xovers is around 1600 Hz. Was under the impression most folks used 10s or 12s for those.
