New Cab Day - Genzler BA 12-3

I apologize for my MIA on here guys. Holiday family time, traveling from east to west to east back to north. Whew!:wacky: Then stomping out the "fires" once back at the homestead. Here's my most recent demo from today.

WOWZERS WOWZERS WOWZERS!!!:woot: That's my impressions of the Magellan 800 and Genzler BA 12-3 cabs continuing demo with my NS-2! Today I separated the 2 Genzler Bass Array 12-3 cabs from the M-800 amp and connected them to my 1968 Ampeg a/b 100W amp.
Sounds fantastic! Even dimed out the Ampeg vol and gain, pulled out the Ultra Low knob, all amp EQ set at 12:00...as soon as I struck the open B string our dog ran for cover In our bedroom and under our bed, hahahaha:roflmao: I stood in front of the cab 20' away and STILL the cab pressure was too great for my ears and the gut punch is that monsterous! WOWZERS!!! And that was out of a 100W head! Love these BA 12-3 cabs! The girth was amazing, clarity and growl prevailed thru the cabs. No farting out or popping. I was tongue in cheek whether or not these cabs would retain all the goodness that my Ampeg provides, warmth, full round lows, strong mids, girth, punchiness. But the BA 12-3 cabs added more sustain, piano clarity and every nuisances of each note plucked. Guys/Gals, I'm here to say to you, there is no other cab that I've played thru that sounds THIS GREAT. Now, connect 2 Genzler BA 12-3 cabs to the Magellan 800...HOLY FREAKIN COW!!!:woot: A sound and volume level that I thought was only possible thru 1-2 SVT Fridges. Now I'm very happy that I sold my SVT Fridge and 410HLF, so I don't have to lug those heavy cabs but instead now I can carry two 12-3 cabs that only weigh in at 37# each AND perform as huge as I need them to. One of these cabs is plenty for every indoor gig save indoor arena, then 2 will cover that gig a plenty. I'll be willing to say that Genzler will have a tough time keeping up with orders with both the M-800 and Bass Array 12-3 cabs. I know bebass, Michael LoMax has sold out already and has an order in for more cabs. Still 1-2 weeks out yet for the M-800 to arrive at Michael's store. Jeff receives them next Friday then he will send them out to the dealers. I HIGHLY recommend these amazing bass equipment!:bassist: You'll hear your Basses like you have never did before. And you thought it was never possible, right? :D

These BA 12-3 cabs look very interesting. I used to run 1, 2 or 3 Berg AE112 cabs. Three of anyone's 112's is the ultimate sounding modular rig for me.

I moved away to a 112 and 212 and now gigging a 2 112 rig, but when a 3rd comes up in the classifieds I'll be back to my 312 stack.

NBG Day! Now this Genzler Magellan 800 is for KEEPS! My Genzler bass rig is complete. Until I buy a third BA 12-3 cab that is.:D

Then you comeback and your busy.
Don't you ever consider our selfish needs:)

I don't think it fair to compared this pro stuff to smaller older gear like our BT-15's.
I want to hear how this bad boy stacks up against the SVT rig!

Tom; Did you have enough time with the Magellan to be able to compare to the Peavey.

Also regarding elevating the cabinet; Jeff would have the final word but as I remember the math works out such that any stand 24" or less will not interfere with acoustic coupling.

Yes. Both are really great, but do things in their own way. I could easily gig with either amp, using quality cabs from any brand. In addition to the different tone stacks and feature sets, the Peavey is a bit more rich and smooth, and the Magellan is a bit more aggressively articulate.

The BA12-3 cabs paired up really well with the Peavey head. I had previously played them with the Magellan head, and they really seem to be made to each other. It seems that the natural tendencies of the Magellan pair up almost perfectly with the tendencies of the BA12-3's. Namely, the head is very present in the middle to upper mids, and has a bit of growl to it, while the cabs come across as being smoother in the middle to upper mids (but probably because of the excellent low mids to upper bass response).

With the Peavey head, I found myself dialing the two bands of semi-parametric mids to sound a bit more like the Magellan (I'll have to look at my settings, but I used a moderate boost to the upper mids and a mild boost around 800Hz), and that worked out really well. The Bass Array cabs really do a great job of covering a broad area with "ideal tone," due to their excellent off-axis performance. In fact, my guitar player came over from the other side of the stage to tell me how great the bass sounded!

I've played this room many times before, with a variety of rigs, and the MM just killed. I was coasting along on the Gain/Vol earlier in the night, and when things got louder during the last set, it had PLENTY of headroom left. This rig had a very impressive sense of "immediacy," and every note was quick to form and nicely full. Some of my basses have a nice bit of growl to them when you dig in, and this came through very well in this rig.

There is a lot of love for two of the BA 123 cabs together. How do you feel about using only one? Have you played a Barefaced Big Baby 2? Can you compare them as single cabs that can handle all, or almost all, indoor gigs. Assume an 800 w head (like the Genzler Magellan 800 or the Mesa Subway 800) putting 400 w into either 8 ohm cab and a band with one guitar, keyboard, drums, and two singers along with my 4 string bass. Music is typical danceable - retro rock, Motown, etc.
I'm looking for one light weight cab to do it all and these are at the top of my short list. Those heads are at the top of their list as well.

I think I may have said this elsewhere around TB, but while I use two for most of my gigs, I use just one for practice in a pretty loud confined place with a full band and it has no problem at all keeping up. I just always like to have more than I need.

I play a single BA12-3 with the Magellan 800 in a church band, a couple of pop bands, and as a side player for a couple of singer/songwriters. None of the settings are particularly loud and the drummers are not crazy hard pounders... still, I've not faced a situation where the single BA12-3 was not enough for my needs. Indeed, if I needed more, I'd begin to worry seriously about my ears. I understand that a second cab would give me even better dispersion, more thump... and that would be nice but I don't see myself needing more volume AND the dispersion and thump are AMAZING with one. Great lows, vocal mids, smooth trebles... I really like this cab. I do play my cab up on a stand. I find that it is so short, add the dispersion characteristics, and it gets hard to hear it well when it is on the floor pointed at my ankles and I'm standing near it.

I haven't played the Barefaced although it was on my short list along with the Audiokinesis Hathor when I purchased my BA12-3. I haven't regretted my choice for a second... the BA210-3 hadn't been released yet when I purchased but it would also be on my list if I was looking today as would two of the BA10-2's. I do prefer the footprint of the 12 vs. the 210. I'm about 98% sure I would still choose the BA12-3 and certain I'd stay with Genzler (not knocking the other two cabs I considered earlier but I know the Genzler works for me).

I played a single 12/3 for awhile with a couple of heads. Mainly a GK 700RBII. Wasn't necessarily loud in the traditional sense but filled every room I played with bass. Other bass players were blown away by this. One was plenty for just about anywhere I played except maybe non PA supported outdoor gigs.

I did add a second and again, not loud in the traditional sense just more of that room filling sound and really, really took EQ well. Once I bought the second I always gigged two even though I really didn't need to. The story goes that three just sound insanely good.

The frequency transitions on the 12/3 are kind of surreal. Super natural, never found myself thinking about the speakers. They were just there and whatever EQ I added did exactly what I thought it would. If that makes sense?

I think a single Genzler 12/3 or 210/3 would be plenty for most indoor non-arena type settings.

As good as the Genzler BA112-3 Arrays are I have to say that the BA210-3 Arrays are even better. If you have a chance to try one do it because for a couple more pounds you get a cabinet that is 500 watts at 8ohm. I have 2 and I couldn't imagine not having them in my arsenal.
