New EB Cobalt Flats?

For you fretless players on this thread: I realize that on their own the Cobalts are “round-like” with their own thing going on. But can you get them to thump with the tone rolled down and a mute?

TIA.

I don't find them particularly round-like, but rather flats that sound 'bigger'. They certainly have a degree of flat wound thud, except the G string on the set I have, which I wish I could deaden a little to better match the other strings.

I use EB cobalt flat on my Ebonol FB fretless pbass before move to copper white nylon.
The EB cobalt sound like roundwound along with growl, I believe the bright sounding Ebonol are the factor too.

Roll off tone knob could sound thump if you use .068 or .1uf cap + mute foam + pluck close to neck side.

So I put an old broken in set on my fretless. Love the feel and the singing tone. But—I was surprised to see some corrosion (until I did a search here). It doesn’t seem to affect the sound. Can I just ignore it or is it going to be a problem? Relatedly, is there a good way to remove it?

My fretless has a finished maple board.

TIA.

I tried the DoOxIt on a lint-free cloth trick and it didn't work, in fact the strings felt a bit worse, so off they come. For a brighter rock flats sound these are great, but for the "one set of flats every few years or longer" vibe on my fretless, I think I will need another option.

Can’t compare to Dunlop. But I had a set on a 35” Lull and quite liked them. I can’t hear any tonal difference from heavier gauges (and certainly not in a mix) so it’s all about what tension you want. They are definitely pliant. Tone was what everyone in this thread said it was. I did a record with them.

Anyone tried 40-95 sets? And how would you compare those to Dunlop Flats in general?

I've had a 40-95 set on my fretless for a few years now, but the only other flats I've ever used on any of my own basses were T-I Jazz Flats, which the bass was specifically built to use. And as I've posted numerous times, I greatly prefer the EBs.

Maybe I am looking For the wrong thing but all the cobalts in the TB store appear to be rounds. Maybe I am just looking for the wrong thing. Looked under both flat wound links and both cobalt links and did not see anything that said cobalt flatwound. Or am I just blind ? And Passinwind I do appreciate the Info.

They are in the Slinky Flatwound category in the TB Store.

Yep, since that is what they're actually called.
