New Fender Antigua models...

And so I did. Just picked up THAT Antigua P from Corner Music in Nashville. Brought home and added straploks, a Fender Fatfinger, and tightened the truss rod about a 1/4 turn. I'm telling ya, I used to sell MIM in the late 90s, and they were crap, but in the last 4 years, Fender Mexico is making some of the best ( suitable for pro-level ) basses since Pre CBS!

That video pushed me over the edge. I'm just about ready to pull the trigger. What's the best price or deal anyone has found yet on these? Musiciansfriend is offering $100 off anything over $600, which sounds great, but is actually $50 more than their usual 20% off for holidays. I will not pay $750 for a MIM Fender, and I'd like to pay less than $650. Any deals anyone?

That's pretty much how I think, but made a rare exception for this one. Really wanted it, and was willing to take the depreciation hit if I didn't like it.

But I guessed right this time. It's a good P bass and I see myself keeping it. The fit 'n finish on mine is excellent, love the glossy neck finish.

It plays great and has surprisingly good note balance across the board. The hardware is a tad on the light side, but more than adequate. I may install a set of Hipshot lollipops if they'll fit.

I fully expected to immediately replace the pickup with a nice old Bart that I have, but the stock pup sounds very good.

Lastly, the paint job is just too cool. And the limited production run appeals to me, as well. What is it actually, 150?....200?

Although I totally think the stock pickups are fine, I'm replacing mine with an authentic '78 grey bottom set, and I should be able to locate a couple of 77-78 CTS pots somewhere soon. After that, the rest of the bass is spot on for that 70s P bass sound, not to mention much lighter than the original 70s model, and no doubt made better than late 70s Fenders. Honestly, I have wanted an Antigua for quite sometime, and now I think I'm gonna have one that'll trump the actual vintage one.

There's no nitro on any of these instruments. The paint is polyurethane. I haven't tried the basses but I did check out the Strat and there's clear poly on the headstock.

I had the similar thoughts even before I got my Antigua Jazz bass. If it was great to play, was very loud acoustically, and the body rang when knocked on, it wouldn't matter what the electronics sounded like. That's the easiest to modify if necessary.
I got what I had hoped for, so I'm going to install a set of Aero pickups I just got as well as use an entire new control plate that has a no-load tone pot & Orange Drop .047 cap.

Trigger hath been pulled on a Jazz. It's that dang Fender dude's fault for saying they're only making 250 of each. Which I don't entirely believe, but didn't want to chance. :) I will now own 3 Fenders. A Jaguar, a Modern Player Tele, and and Antigua Jazz. Not too bad for a guy who's not a Fender fan, ay? I think there's something seriously wrong with me sometimes.

Lol! When I started out playing, I specifically did NOT want a Fender (everyone else had them, they didnt have modern "deluxe" features, etc...). Fast forward about 7 or so years & half of my instruments were Fenders & most of my "go-to" basses as well! There are limitations to the classic designs & mass production isnt always ideal, but dangit- a Fender bass just friggin' works!

Why do I even bother signing on to TB?

They are like a sexy big girl. As much as I try, I just can't take my eyes off of them.

I bought one of each. While I am deeply ashamed, worst case scenario, Aguilar(s) in the P and Lindys in the Jazz. Ta Da !

If anyone is having a problem finding them, they just showed up as in stock at Zzounds today.

Just bought the Jazz this afternoon! :hyper:

The neck is very cool, straight, in tune, with low action (after adjustment)... The finish is very nice for a mex. I wouldn't see any difference over a MIA except for the cheaper bridge. She's 9 pounds 2 oz...

I prefered the J over the P (already have 2 P's and another one coming later this summer). I didn't like the pots and knobs on the P. Overall, the J seemed more 'solid' to me...

Eeeek... this just brought to mind something I hadn't considered. Are these noiseless pickups? I'm obviously not a J bass guy, and it slipped my mind that I may have to deal with hum now that I'm not accustomed to. Assuming they're not noiseless, as it doesn't say anywhere that they are, what's the hum like on this bass?
